Request Permissions to Set Road Closures

Post by
From now on, all new, approved AM areas will automatically include full closure rights. This will mean that Area Managers will be able to directly manage closures within their area, even for roads locked above their rank.

If you are already an active and contributing Area Manager, you may request to have closure rights for your home area only. Please send us an email via the usual address, with a permalink of the area you'd like rights to.

We reserve the right to refuse requests from anyone we feel isn't fulfilling their role of AM.

With great power, some great responsibility. AMs must be mindful that a) closures will directly affect routing for users who rely on Waze daily, and b) closure information that is available online is often unreliable. Therefore, when closing a road, AMs must accept for responsibility for that closure, and deal with any comments* or URs that come back from users. (*Comments from users are only visible within the app)

General guidelines:
  • Roads can be closed for up to 6 months, in one or both directions
  • Closures will come in to effect within a few minutes, or at a planned future date
  • Segments cannot be closed if their IDs have changed since the last map update
  • Closed segments cannot be edited until the closure has expired
We recommend that AMs do NOT attempt to manage real-time closures due to unplanned incidents. It is exceedingly difficult, and requires constant monitoring of traffic information.

Refer to the Wiki page on How to Use the WME Closure Feature.

I think I probably know the answer to this but just for clarity:
Can we use this feature for closing roads for an event (I.e. a marathon)? Or are we still to use the event sheets.

Additionally, just to backup what Tim said about online sources of information for closures. I was putting a lot of work into reporting road closures on the M6 where they are currently "upgrading" to Managed/Active motorway. I've often found the times and dates stated online do not hold true. I'm now only closing segments when I have seen those yellow notice signs. This obviously means I can only close segments that are on my commute.
I tend to find online resources that involve local council (well at least in my area) are more accurate than Highways Agency reported closures.

Sorry Tim, I've just reread this thread. In the email do you want Area Managers to provide the permalink for their area when requesting the closure permissions?

I now appear to have an "Add Closures" button. It doesn't cover "my" entire area so I'm unable to test if I am able to add a closure to a road where I am unable to edit.

Is that only for UK or all of the ROTW server?. And yes I like to trawl all over the server, but generally keep my nose out of things I don't know anything about :)

  • Mega Traffic Events should continue to be submitted via that existing process.
  • TrafficEngland.com shows matrix signs for entire network. Worth checking for confirmation.
  • Closure rights are granted via permalinks, i.e. the area is what you can see on the screen.
  • Only Area Managers can apply to have closure rights.
Might it be useful to have a sub-forum for Events, so that editors can check to see if an event is already in the process of being set up before adding any closures via this route.

I have set up an event with waze for the Tour of Cambridgeshire this weekend, and after setting the closures for day one I noticed that there were already closures manually entered. I doubt there are any side effects of both setting closures but it seems like a waste of effort.

My Area seems to be about 2 miles x 2 miles from where I live. So I cover the A12/M25 Junction.

How do I get to expand this to the Area I am Area Manager? Every time I try and get a link for the Area I am Area Manager for. I end up with a Square around Chelmsford. :?

So what do I do?

The trouble is the area I drive is almost the whole of the Area I am a manager for. I been driving it 20 year so know it Quite well. I have to keep submitting requests to put in road closure. If there is no way to get the whole area then I will stop doing it. I am getting fed up of wasting other editors time and mine putting in requests for things I could do.

I have just had a rough count up and I submitted about 30 [CLOSURE] requests since the 1st June.

With with all the cycle Superhighway work going on at the moment closures are booked on Roadworks.org but not used. They then appear and disappear quickly. But I can't do anything about it.

This segment near my home I could put a closure on. Here Since Roadworks.org says it will be closed until 2017 for Crossrail work. But I know that in the Local newsletter that local people are moaning about it being close for so long so the Closure is not there yet. ;)

Sorry for the Rant but I feel better now :D

As for link for area hopefully this is what you require https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=row&lo ... 957&zoom=0

Just in case anyone doesn't see it, on the new release of WME the closures button has now moved to a separate tab at the top of the left hand panel. (I thought I lost my access for a minute.)
