About MapMonitorBot (formerly ClosureMonitor)

Post by
I have been developing a system that monitors feeds of road closures from Highways England, for both roadworks and incidents. It then applies them to WME with help from some champs (but gradually becoming autonomous). This is all done in (almost) real-time, and the closures are removed as soon as Highways says they are open again. I think this is more responsive than closures entered in advance.

You may come across such closures as you edit the map, and they will all be created or updated by a user called ClosureMonitor. While I believe that the Highways feeds are moderately accurate, there may be occasions when it is just wrong. If you see any reports or comments about such-and-such road not being closed, please send me a PM about it.

:ugeek:

Update: We now monitor all closures for comments and update requests, and act on them as we can.

Don't wish to cast dispersions on your clever auto closures, as they are very good, but...

My understanding is that the A45 (E) - Stonebridge Highway is closed overnight [Highways England PDF] and ClosureMonitor has added the closure over the start of the closure but failed to close the majority of the A45 allowing access from the A46/A444 roundabout.

I can't argue with the system, I should've done the obvious thing and took a drive up as I only live a couple of mile away. The Highways England info isn't always perfectly clear in describing what is fully closed and what is lane closures. I'm guessing the diversion PDF if a generic plan incase they close sections at any time during the works.

I agree the Closure Monitor is a great system you've developed, did you remember to patent it and now reaping in the royalties from Waze :?:

Hi guys, a brief query if you can check any logs please.

I have a UR (12 Jul 19:31) on the A45 / A46 roundabout with Wave directing WB when the user wanted EB. This should be during the ClosureMonitor's short, well deserved, holiday. I can't think of another reason Waze would direct like this in the evening unless it thought the EB slip was closed.

Many thanks :)

There are currently night closures on the A46 between Coventry & Warwick, both directions but separate areas. Nothing shown in Waze & difficult to understand the HE website as I'm currently mobile. Any easier way to check?

Example of several on HE site, I think:
Period : from 21:31 on 8 August 2016 to 08:00 on 9 August 2016. Location : The A46 southbound entry slip from the A429 . Status : Currently Active. Lanes Closed : All lanes are closed. Reason : Road resurfacing.

Had a similar thing this morning I think, M6 J2 slip onto the M69 showed as closed at 7am, should've opened at 6am. When I went to add a comment it decided to clear it from the map.

Dare I ask if HQ are actively squashing this bug.

Silly question time. When responding to a UR that questioned a closure, that is in the past, is it possible to see a historic HE feed or is it a case of looking at ClosureMonitor logs? I have a report on a section of road that HE have night closures 8pm-6am with the report at 5:39am so I'm assuming they opened early.

If it is only CM logs, and Tim has nothing to do.... would it be possible to make the CM logs viewable in some fashion so we can dazzle wazers with our knowledge.

Is there any record of the A46 near Warwick being closed overnight 16-17th June :?: There is nothing on Roadworks.org for continuing work, this should be covered by HE & therefore ClosureMonitor.

I always check the Highways England network map if I'm unsure of adding a closure, other than the MP stating HE as the originator of course.

As for CM taking over a manual closure, I've had Tim remove closures on HE roads to ensure CM takes responsibility so I would say CM won't take over a manual closure.

All hail the mighty ClosureMonitor, however I would like to query how it amends for early opening. There was a closure on the M54 last night 20:00 to 06:00, it reopened after only 25 mins. At 21:33, instead of removing the closure CM edited it to end at a time in the past, I'm not entirely sure how WME handles this paradox but there has been a URs this morn that suggests the closure was still present in some respect.

I'm sure I've see the segment history state Road closure: deleted

EDIT: Removed fake news

 Of course, you're obviously right, the edit was From, seeing 2 times I was obsessed with the end time.

Now if there was someone I could blame for not making the extended segment history clearer

On a side note I am always curious why CM has opening times of 06:00 set to 06:01 which for Waze is actually closed until 06:01.59. Should it not should be set to -1 minute.
