Birmingham - Edgbaston legal u-turn causing issues

Post by atrophicshiner
Calling all routing experts. This Update Request has highlighted an issue cause by a legal u-turn on Bristol Road. There is no other reason for this segment to exist other than to allow u-turns. Route Speeds shows Waze believes it takes 193 seconds to queue to turn right out of Priory Road into Bristol Road and is therefore attempting to speed things up for the wazer.

I don't want to delete the u-turn segment without consulting you wonderful lot. My only other thought would be to have a Junction Box placed to cover the crossroads and the u-turn :?

Thoughts please.

Maybe this is a one off caused but an unlikely event in which case not worth changing.

How about a box just covering the U turn and the entrance to the school so that the only valid route if taking the U turn is to go into the school?

Or the other way is to not connect the U turn to the other carriageway of the A38 but run a new road parallel (but very close so it's not visible) to the A38 and connect it to the existing school entrance road. Make sure you then disable the right turn where it joins the school road so that drivers get a turn left instruction into the school.

I don't really want to delete this segment as I agree it is a fully legal option. I couldn't get Route Speeds or LiveMap to recreate the reported route so can't be sure how much time this would save.

I've not been able to ever recreate this routing, I'm guessing it was a unique combination of scenarios that gave this suggestion. I'll close the report as no other URs have been raised since.

Hi Guys,
As we're at a champs meeting with Waze right now - I've just raised this with the main routing developer. He said he'd check the logs and see if it showed anything.

I'd be tempted to leave this alone for the moment. It does appear to be a one-off as a simple route through the right-turn is showing as less than 2 minutes. If you get more reports then we can look at how to prevent the U-turn for that route, and a Junction Box around the school entrance would be the best way to do this.

Cheers, Andrew

No - although they may have looked at it and just not told me.
The route in LiveMap seems to be OK at peak times - is it still happening in the app?

The u-turn provision appears to be to enable westbound traffic to access the school on the north side of the road - looking at Streetview there's a signed restriction on turning right directly into the school access road off the A38, so you'd have to get onto the eastbound side of the road somehow...

If this segment were to be deleted, it'd then cause routes to the school to instead instruct a u-turn at the junction with the A4029 a little further on. As this junction isn't all that far away from the present u-turn segment, there's also then a question over whether or not Waze would also see *this* u-turn as still being a more favourable routing option than waiting in the queue to turn right directly out of Priory Road - there's a risk that in deleting the u-turn segment you'd just move the problem sightly further along the road.

Now, if this was one of those junctions where Waze was getting users to turn left and then immediately/almost immediately do a u-turn around the far end of the junction to head back in the right direction, then I'd say it would need redesigning. In this case though, you have to question just what is "wrong" with such a suggested route, as it's not taking advantage of a flaw in how any of the junctions are mapped out, nor is it abusing the u-turn segment (there's no signage to say you can only u-turn here if you're trying to access the school). And if it really does take over 3 minutes to clear the right-turning queue of traffic leaving Priory Road, then it doesn't feel like Waze is being overly aggressive in trying to shave seconds off the journey time.

As a side note, the aforementioned NRT restriction into the school access road from Bristol Road, and the corresponding NRT restriction onto Bristol Road from the school access, aren't currently marked in WME...
