Blocking a user from reporting cameras etc

Post by
Hi

We seem to be having an issue with a specific user around the Stevenage/Luton/Hitchin/Letchworth area with them littering the map with loads of incorrect camera reports.

I've recently deleted loads of them associated to this user and I think @PhantomFlanFlinger has also seen and deleted reports from this user in the past. Another load of reports have cropped up today. Some examples can be found here: Permalink

The user in question is "world_i9sxe7eh"

Is it possible to get this user blocked from creating these reports?

Hi, I'm new here but I use Waze all the time but I've noticed that some of the smart motorway gantry cameras are not on the map. They used to be a few years back but they're not now. I think you might be seeing people adding gantries to the maps and assuming each gantry contains a camera.

Looking in my local area, it seems random users are also adding non existent cameras and some are adding cameras where there some already placed.

I was going to offer to ask HQ to create a forum account for this user - so you can ask them to stop. But I made the same request for the same reason for another world_ user yesterday - and the staff comment is "Not adding forum accounts to temp users".

I can request this user is blocked from reporting through the app - but that will block all reporting. They may just get tired of reporting cameras that never appear. Up to you. ;)

I don't think it really needs that. I see very few repeat/massive offenders and they don't do any harm to the map - just an irritation for those of us keeping the map clean. Remember that URO+ will allow you to hide cameras not created by world_ users and then it's a pretty quick job to clear them out.

And if you think the situation you are facing is bad, have a look at what we were contending with back in 2012. :)

Block requested.

I'm pretty sure the picture block will work as this falls under the "Block reporting places" option in the form we use to request blocks.

As for the cameras - it's beginning to look like there simply isn't any way to block camera reporting. One of the users above has previously been blocked from "Reporting Places" and "Reporting URs" - the only two reporting options I can request to be blocked.

Realistically, I don't think there's any chance HQ will spend time on implementing a way to block users from reporting cameras. No matter how many they report, they will never affect the app unless an editor approves them - and we can contact someone who edits. I know they can be an irritation for you, but that's all it is. URO+ will help you to pretty quickly clear all cameras from a single user.

It's a very long-standing problems. People will report speed cameras. But they will also report:
  • Trafficmaster monitoring cameras
  • CCTV cameras
  • Infrared traffic sensors on traffic lights
  • Speed camera signs
  • Speed camera markings on the carriageway where there is no camera
  • Motorway gantries
  • Police cars doing mobile speed traps
  • Moving police cars
  • Highways Agency cars
  • DVLA ANPR cameras
  • Anyone in a high-vis jacket
  • Electronic signs that tell you how fast you're going
  • Bright yellow "for sale" signs
Another thing I see, which makes me smile, is 3 cameras on top of each other at a residential address. One speed, one red-light, one dummy. That means a new user has installed Waze and decided to report a camera when they get home - not knowing you can only report a camera at your current location.

I also see, at least once a month, that the App simply fails to show cameras for a period. Probably some sort of server problem, but that leads drivers to report existing cameras.

The last common problem is people reporting additional speed cameras at combined red-light/speed camera locations. Waze can only have one camera, although we've been asking Waze for, literally, years to handle them better.

None of this will stop until Waze remove camera reporting from the app. :(

It turns out this request somehow didn't make it to the action sheet, so I've redone it and confirmed it's on the sheet.

The other 3 camera reporter requests are marked as actioned.

Unfortunately it seems to be a way of new users getting some points quickly and easily.
I seem to be regularly rejecting pictures of the inside of a car from what I suspect is a Uber (or similar) driver. He goes around with a picture (the hanging curly cable of a radio mic is a popular one) on the phone until he gets close to a Waze point and then adds it. I often see the same picture from the same user attached to several places.
I think you get more points for adding pictures recently and I suspect even if the picture (or camera) is rejected, you still get the points.

Oh the joys of trying to keep the map clean!! :D

Please can I ask for user world_slobehhv to be blocked from leaving pictures. I am regularly deleting up to 20 pictures a day of the inside of his car, where he is driving about in London and attaching these pictures every time he passes a Waze point. I assume he is accumulating points and may well soon be able to leave these without needing approval!!

As an example,
