Definition of "Taxi" for Vehicle Restrictions

Post by
In the land of Waze, the definition of "Taxi" is a licensed Hackey Carriage, AKA a "black cab", that can be hailed from the kerb or taxi rank. If a road sign says "No Access Except Taxi", then the vehicle restrictions for those segments can be set to allow Taxi to use it.
As such, only those who drive a licensed Hackney Carriage should enable the Taxi mode in their app.

Private Hire Vehicles (PHV), also referred to as "minicabs", are not considered to be Taxi, and drivers should not use Taxi Mode. This applies to Uber drivers too.

Some local authorities (e.g. York) do allow minicabs to use Taxi only routes, while others (Oxford) will only allow locally licensed minicabs. In London, only Taxis are allowed to use the Taxi designated routes. This is far too complicated to encapsulate in the vehicle restriction, and often very difficult for an editor to research the local rules for.

So, one simple rule: Taxi means Taxi

Reminder about other vehicle restrictions: (see HOV is not a bus! thread)
  • "Motorcycle" is now supported in the app, and should be used accordingly
  • "Bus" also includes minibus and coach. Not supported, but useful for mapping reality.
  • "Public Transport" specifically refers to a local bus for when signs say only these [not supported]
  • "Truck/Lorry" is not well defined, and not supported in the app [do not use]
  • Other vehicle types are not used at all, and should be ignored.

I don't know if you drive a Diesel but I know from 8th April 2019 my Van will be hit with the £11.50 and a extra £12.50. But ULEZ charge is 24/7 ULEZ = Ultra Low Emission Zone.

Now if you want more information visit TfL website Here

My firm has 1 Van that has the T-charge now but this will affect a few more Vans next year.

In Nottingham, and I assume other cities, some roads are restricted with a definition of "wheelchair accessible taxis"....such as here: https://goo.gl/maps/qbwivaFZ9QS2
As all black cabs seem to use these roads, I've assumed that its ok for taxis to be included as allowed vehicles.

Might also need reminding that if Taxis or Motorcycles are Toll Free on Toll roads, that a 'Toll Free' restriction is now available to be set for those vehicle types. This will override the single Toll option.

I'm only implying the toll-free option should be used for those vehicles that are free. Like the Mersey Gateway, it's free for motorcycles, but not taxis.

Do we now also need to start enabled the Bus Lane attribute, for those taxis and buses who can use these lane? We then add restrictions to that Bus lane to say only Taxis (and public transport) can use them.

I'm assuming this will be better for for timings for Taxis if we implement it.

If not, never mind.

Probably, but licensing of taxis and private hire vehicles can vary from authority to authority.
This came up in Reading a while ago: viewtopic.php?f=375&t=245804
We allowed taxis there because the local authority only permits vehicles with wheelchair access to be called taxis.

Well written - I foresee a new job for you as a licensing officer in our local authority - You have a better understanding than they do and they are supposed to enforce it !!!!
