'Road Number to Road Number <odds/evens> streets?

Post by BlueVanVOG
In my driving area, there are a few estates, for example much of Llanedyrn and Pentwyn, Cardiff which have entire estates with a single street name and roads running along the backs of properties with pathways at the front, and each branch off the 'main' street is signposted with the house number range on that cul-de-sac and odds/evens. Invariably on these estates Waze is really, really bad at finding house numbers and takes what seems like a complete guess.

Is there any mechanism for us to map this system without having to number each individual house position? I say that partially out of not wanting to number each house, but also because almost nobody bothers to place house numbers on their boundaries. This is incredibly frustrating for mobile working but also frustrates numbering efforts (which I do not yet really understand the ins and outs of yet anyway).

At a meet up a couple of years ago it was vaguely implied that HQ would improve the priority of house numbers added via the MWE in the search results. I had the impression that we could add numbers to each end of a row of house and Waze might interpolate the rest. However, I have never seen this work.

Numbering the lot would be the only way to be sure. This is unlikely to change the dynamic search of the App which shows Google data.

You can find most house numbers to check locations, using https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/ ... map-search which has a search and then zoom in to closest view.

When you use the search, the dynamic results, as you type, are generally pulled from Google data. You need to hit the Search button or "More results for..." to see a true return of Waze data.

This does cause problems with new build areas, we can map a road and it 'doesn't show' in the results until Google also add it to their map.

How frustrating. I suppose the priority in development is probably still given to the original purpose of navigating around traffic etc. leaving terminal guidance as a lower intention or completely ignored. Which is frustrating because I often use Waze guidance within my patch for hazard warnings, a certain amount of traffic dodging (though this is often counterproductive in Cardiff) and terminal guidance to house numbers. Generally it's quite reliable but it breaks down completely in single-postcode estates.

So the house numbers we add when mapping newbuild housing estates, are they generally overridden by another system when searching for a specific address? I only ask as there is a huge amount of new development to be mapped in the VoG at the moment.

That is a problem in the areas I'm mainly looking at like Llanedyrn where the Google data is simply awful - their interpolation just doesn't work, unsurprisingly, where entire shared postcode areas connected by main distributor roads have sequential house numbers. Where I'm mapping numbers in Llanedyrn, I always map the access point to the houses with roads both front and back, to where the driveway is, which is usually the 'rear' of the house. This ensures consistency with the other houses where the frontages are onto a pathway, not a road. Google on the other hand is completely inconsistent in this regard, so number 40 might be on Round Wood off Circle Way E, and number 41 then shows on Round Wood off Circle Way W (pure hypothetical) when in fact the two houses are in terrace.

One word of caution - it's fine to check some house numbers there, but those maps are Ordnance Survery / Crown Copyright so can't be used as a source to populate Waze.

Another complication we have is that search results can contain addresses from Waze house numbers, Waze residential places and/or Google house numbers. As you would expect, the Waze information should take priority .. see viewtopic.php?f=655&t=251848

I think I read somewhere a while back that this does work, but only on roads where Google doesn't return any house number positions of its own. If this was/still is true, then given how widespread Google's data is for the UK, it doesn't surprise me that interpolation doesn't seem to work here...
