Off and On URs

Post by Kevintiobraid
Being a good boy and mopping up some neglected motorway URs. There seems to be quite a few off and on URs in the last few weeks, heres an example of a couple on the M42:

I've been responding saying that this shouldn't happen, but sometimes does due to heavy traffic or a system glitch....and that theres nothing we can do.
Just wondering if theres anything else that needs to be done with these errors, I assume theres nothing really that can be done to avoid this happening?

Definitely seen a spike in these URs in the last couple of weeks. All junctions so far have been setup to trigger detour avoidance and the junctions I know of don't suffer from long tailbacks that might nudge Waze to use the roundabout. Seems the routing server is not playing nicely.

Done. I'll leave you to test (if possible) and reply to the UR.

Thank you
It's usual for slip roads to have different names, what matters for detour avoidance is that the main line road segments (those you don't want to be detoured off) should have the same name - and here they do "M1 (S), no city, Central Bedfordshire".

However, the road was closed according to Highways England! There was supposed to be daytime resurfacing last weekend, just within the junction, so Waze was correct to try to detour people up and down the slip roads. Whether the closure actually happened on the ground, I don't know. It is not unknown for roadworks to get cancelled but stay on the Highways England feed. :(

The first UR was timed just before the roadworks were due to end, and it is usual for there to be a time lag between the closure ending on the ground and the Highways England feed updating. However, the second UR was closer to the middle of the "closed" period, hence me now wondering whether it happened at all.

Anyway, I can't see a problem with Waze here. It's dealing with the data it's given as best it can. :) UR's replied to & closed.

Trying to wrap my head around the detour prevention here, would the problem here maybe be that the first segment before the detour has a county of Hertfordshire whereas the first one after the detour has a county of Central Bedfordshire? Or does the detour prevention mechanism only look at the segment name and not the city/county?

Any other reason for an off/on here you can see (other than the routing server playing up)?
Generally the road name of the continuation must be the same throughout the main route, including the segment before and after, and both main and alternative names are looked at. In this case, they are the same. I've noticed in the past that the county could also have an effect. The segment before the junction is Hertfordshire and the new two are Central Bedfordshire. I suggest making sure the counties are the same. The may have to be split.
