[POLL] Junction Naming Scheme [UK]

Postby laurentmahe » Wed Oct 02, 2013 4:42 pm

Not sure if this is the right place, if not please feel free to correct me / point me to the right location.
I have an annoyance with the spoken directions / instructions when driving from 1 motorway to another one (like M23 to M25). The instructions are like "Exit left onto M23 North Junction 10 to M25 West"
Whereas I understand a full detailed name of the ramp is useful for traffic reporting, it's really annoying when directed.
Are there any plans to improve this with a shorter announcement?

thanks

[I've been waiting ages for someone to reopen this can of worms...] ;)

I've expressed dislike to our ramp naming scheme years ago, but could not convince the rest of the UK editing community. I still think it's too long, and would prefer to see them more like "Exit left onto Junction 10 M25 West".

I always said that navigation instructions were more important, and more frequent, than any traffic reports. Now we can limit the client to only show 'reports on route', there's really no need for the current road name to be included (i.e. M23).

My pet hate is A-roads without junction numbers, where Waze will say "Exit left onto A64 Exit to A19". Must be a better way...

I get used to but still don't like it. Yes, it'll be better if it is 'Exit left onto A19'. However, without dig out the convention history, I believe we added 'A64 Exit to...' is for the traffic report. Without this bit, traffic report will say, for eg. 'Heavy traffic on A19...' but actually it was on A64 sliproad. That's confusing.

Junction wise, I'm not sure if Waze will say the Junction name or number in the future if the Junction feature is introduced.

If we could 'translate' the TTS to say 'keep left' instead of 'exit left' that that would solve the problem of double exits. Failing that, we could use [Exit left onto] "Junction to A19" or just [Exit left on] "to A19" (as per US).

Do we really have that many reports that we need to know which road the exit is from? Surely restricting reports to the route is enough? This feature was missing back then.

There's not enough space on the map popups to show it all anyway.

My preferred naming ramp naming scheme would be:
* Jx to Mx, Axx - for junction with numbers
* Junction to Axx, Bxxx (or just: to Axx...) - without numbers

Incidentally, motorway-to-motorway splits don't use ramps or ramp names, and simply announce "Keep left to M1 North". This seems to work very nicely and no one's complained.

I support Tims scheme too, at some junctions the TTS is so long that it repeats immediately and it all becomes one long confusing string

Hi,

Silly question but wasn't the name convention set originally to aid traffic reports, so that they'd be clear as to where, exactly the traffic report related to?

Des. . . ;)

Yes, but <see my previously posted arguments above>.
