UR: discrepancy between route and turn instructions

Post by ditchi56
Here's something I've not seen before. The purple line trace on the UR looks fine, straight along the A road. However, the turn icons suggest the user was told to make a pointless diversion into a lay-by. It's not totally certain what prompted the UR, but this seems a likely cause. I've seen plenty of pointless diversions, but not previously one which appears only on the turn instructions and not on the purple line. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately I changed the lay-by from street to "parking lot" before I realised that the purple line didn't go through it.

Hi,

So should we now, by default be adding two nodes to 1) these circular roads and 2) laybys etc that leave and rejoin the same road?

That one you just fixed, there appears to be an additional road where a node is - shouldn't hat have been added (as there look to be houses there)?

Des. . . ;)

It would have been a stupid route. If there was a traffic jam on the A246, how long would you have to wait to make the right turn back onto it?

However, the main concern here is the discrepancy between the trace on your screen and on the UR.

I'll leave the UR open until the "big brains" of Waze have had a chance to pick this up and comment.

Damn! Should have spotted the two segments rejoining without a node in-between! OK, fixed that now, and already changed the lay-by to a private road.

This is a known issue, I'm afraid. The algorithm that produces the purple line has got confused.

The turn icons on the WME route and the client display clearly shows that the driver was sent through the side section. The problem is that the two segments here start & end on the same junction node. Since the route is a list of connected nodes, the server doesn't know which of the 2 available segments to use to move from one node to the next. This definitely causes problems when generating the "Waze provided route" and may cause problems in the client as well.

There are 2 solutions needed here. The first is that one of the two segments needs to be split by a junction node - normally the "layby" segment. That will prevent the route confusion issues.

The other thing needed is to prevent routing through the layby section. This can be done by changing it to PLR or Private.

WME Toolbox will highlight these for you: "Same connection segments".

Also note that, for very similar reasons, we believe that it is no longer sufficient to split a dead-end loop in just one place. The 2 resulting segments will still have the same start & endpoints and this has been known to cause trouble trying to route out of the loop.

Example of one I just found & fixed.

Only one node is needed for a bypass/layby type.

The example I gave was just the first one I could find quickly whilst eating my lunch! I would class that extra stub as a driveway and might not have added it. But, if you actually add a segment in cases like that, it's less likely to get removed by someone who thinks the node shouldn't be there.

In general, loops like that do need 2 nodes - whether or not they have stubs attached.

This (add a splitting node) applies to the standard design of petrol station forecourt roads, too.

Right - - This is what I saw. The traffic routing may have been "legitimate" because of the traffic i had just reported, but I felt it wasn't really suitable.

It's also worrying that the Waze UR reported route is different to the one i saw on the screen...

PS (edit) - I thought i had marked it as "wrong driving directions" rather than anything else. Problem with wanting to clear the screen while "driving"...
