London Aerials

looks like some of south east london has got some new aerials but google forgot to stitch them in the right place.

Now the OCD in me is going crazy. Aerial shifter is helping, but thought I would mention before someone comes along and edits all the roads to move them back in line.

[EDIT] - for the reference of editors directed to this topic.
You will need the WME Aerial Shifter script and use a vertical offset of -10 if editing in London.

This script will shift the aerials automatically whenever you're in "London".

I've just been using a straight -10m vertical. 1 or 2 metres isn't going to make any real difference.

Phone GPS isn't accurate down to that level and I wouldn't expect aerials to be that precisely aligned under normal circumstances - although 10m out is obviously pretty major!

:D  :D  :D  :D

Even Googles own editors are screwing it up now.

That's a screenshot from Google maps. Somebody has realigned the roads to the east of Westminster bridge to match the mis-aligned aerials. But they've left the bridge segment itself alone, so it is still correctly aligned with reality.

I guess that's where we have an advantage. We can see the GPS tracks that prove that the roads are correctly aligned and it's the aerial images that are wrong.

If that's MadPeck(2), I've already PMed him and I'm partway through the fixes. He hasn't done a bad job - just wasted his time really. :(

Where does that lower image come from? I can't see it in Google Maps, or Earth, or Waze.

In Gmaps, I see that the Westminster Bridge road segment does now match the aerial image - but that's because both are out of alignment! I'm guessing that, rather than moving the images to correctly align with the roads, they've moved the roads to align with the images!

I cam across an area of about 100 segments last night in Gmaps, where a Gmaps editor has re-aligned all the roads to the incorrect images. As a result, when you grab the GSV dude, none of the blue lines match up with the segments.

If you can supply me with any permalinks where you can see new aerials or think they might have been moved, I'll check.

[EDIT] I'd still like to know where you saw that new image, but the rest of what I said is probably out of date. See below

Not everything - unfortunately.

Westminster Bridge, which Andy quoted above still has misaligned aerials and needs the script.

I've had a quick look during my lunch break and a couple of areas in North London have had the aerials correctly aligned. In all cases I've checked, the images are not new: they are still the image set from July 2013.

I hope this is a "work in progress" - because if it isn't, it's going to be an absolute nightmare to find the boundaries now.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH.

Additional information: whatever realignment has happened probably started after 2am last night. That was when I closed the editor - and at that time, the UR I was working on had misaligned aerials. Now, those aerials are fixed.

So no need to panic that it might have been fixed for days and we didn't notice.

Small comfort that that is.

Bump for awareness.

I've noticed some areas of roads being moved to match the misaligned aerials in South London.
Will PM some of the recent editors.

Thanks Iain - yes, you clearly beat me to it.
Other recent editors are 'EuthrixPotatoria' and 'MadCabbie' but I think both have been fixing the alignment and the recent wave of MPs.

What adjustments are people generally use with Aerial Shifter?

GPS tracks nearly always give me the best alignment with -10 vertical and +1 horizontal for the areas I'm editing. Generally this is inside M25 - West, North-West and North London.
