Are there only 6 editors in Oz that care about roading standards.

To be fair there are only about 3 in NZ

When you label a street what abbreviation do you use?

e.g.

If you use the US Postal service as a source see how many types of abbreviations one could use for AVENUE

Why should the street type in the Waze database be abbreviated at all? It makes no sense to have a contraction in the actual stored data.
Oh dear..............

I actually personally don't disagree but I sense no support for this concept in the Australia waze community. (my background is openstreetmap)

Av and also Ave in WA
Can you show us examples

I'll be interested how google maps, bing maps etc handle this.

My guess is a profession mapping services standardize the abbreviations?

Look at this example

The street sign says "Elstree Av" but google maps says "Elstree Ave"

We know the real name is "Elstree Avenue" and I don't think it really matters what abbreviation (in relationship to the sign) we use but I think it should be standardized like a professional mapping service.

I think it doesn't matter that much. Waze TTS should be able to handle both
I this case this would happen automatically

We can not turn off the TTS abbreviation "Ave" but we can control how we label the streets

We can add "Av" to the custom list.

The question has been what do we add to the custom list. (we can't change the default list)

I have seen street signs that say Av and also Ave in WA. Street signs are installed by local councils, it's up to those councils to decide what they put on them.

Isn't that what we've done by having the wiki page as reference? When you look at town planning sites their abbreviation for Avenue is Av, I think it doesn't matter that much. Waze TTS should be able to handle both, it's not like either could be mistaken for something else.

I was trying to search for Douglas Ave in Yokine the other day and Waze wouldn't show it in the search results unless I specified the correct abbreviation on record in WME. ("Av")
You'll probably find a very high percentage of "Av" in WA rather than Ave.

For many of us, sticking with street abbreviations has always been the norm. As I like consistency, I never questioned it. To change now to an unabbreviated state would be a mammoth undertaking, as to only take it up going forward would bring in inconsistency, which is not professional.
