Average Speed Zones for heavy vehicles

Postby ituajr » Fri Apr 06, 2018 4:35 am

NSW has some Average Speed Zones which apply to heavy vehicles only. (These are distinct from the Safe-T-Cam network, which extends from Nullarbor Village to Tweed Heads, and is not practical to represent in Waze.) Opinions are divided on whether to show these heavy vehicle Average Speed Zones in Waze, but we seem to have come to some agreement that they should not.

Before I document this as a decision, does this problem arise in any other state/territory? Are there any objections to treating it as an Australia-wide policy?

I don't believe it applies in QLD. Uncertain on other states. In the absence of other comments, you're probably safe to roll it out nationwide in the wiki (it can change in future if a need arises).

Just a heads up - Average Speed Zones in the ACT apply to all vehicles. We don’t have any heavy vehicle only ones.

There's been some media coverage on this recently and I took the time to read up on the politics. It seems The Nationals made it an electoral promise not to introduce it for cars in NSW and the current and previous government are not keen to break the election promise. However, it's clear that with a change of government or if the road toll in NSW continues to climb, it would be very easy to see a change to align with other jurisdictions.

That said, I think Wazers in NSW would benefit from a clear direction on how to proceed on the matter. If we remove them/don't map them, and there's a policy change later, it would be a 2 hours work to implement them again as all the average speed zones (along with speed cameras and red light cameras) are all listed on the RMS website.

Seven days with no dissent, and positive support from the Country Admin Team and a Country Manager. The decision is now documented in the Aus Wiki.

I did a little reading too. One interesting thing I discovered is that the "Vector" and "HAREcam-PA" devices used to implement Average Speed Zones in NSW are approved for instantaneous speed detection as well as average speed detection. (Source: NSW Gov't Gazette, page 2389/2390.) That's not to say they are actually used like that, but it opens up the possibility that they could be.

Did we want to actively flag and remove existing cameras?

Pius there is a section of the Federal Highway with the Average Speed Zone Flag set.
The Highway has a Level 3 Lock. I have marked the start of the zone but have no way of seeing where the zone ends.

If they are only for heavy vehicles, yes.
