Highways with "local" names

Post by restless_in_nb
I apologize if this has been asked before but I can't seem to find an answer.

Many highways, when they cross towns, have local names, such as in this example
https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... s=59729543

I know that waze supports alternate names for a road, but in this case, the person creating the segment just used both names in the name. So my question is, in these instances, should we
1. Use alternate names with the primary name being the highway number
2. Use appended names such as Rte 100/Main St
3. Use whichever, or both, there is no difference.

Thanks!

What do the street signs say at the intersections?

Exactly.

But sometimes the signs can all say "Hwy 97" but the local name for it is the John Hart Highway (or Cariboo Highway). (Near Prince George, BC)

In this case, we use Hwy 97 as name.

Nope.

Civic addressing can be accomplished through Alt Names and is of little importance in giving navigational instructions.

As far as search goes, there are other sources for that data that aren't part of the segment naming.

The Waze standard is (and always has been) that the primary name of the segment needs to be what is visible on the street signs. Without this, the instructions "Turn left at XYZ St" make no sense.

How about addressing? I think we should also consider what the proper road name is in the civic address of properties along the road way. Maybe this is a mute point, because the civic road name is found on the sign. All though the way that waze searches for an address is something to consider.

If a road is named "Local St / Hwy #", and a user searches for 123 Local St, will Waze find the address point within Waze without going to Google? May have to do some testing...

Alt. names are supported in the WME but they're not actually supported in the client. They're not even used for search results. I believe in the US/UK and other parts of the world where shields are enabled, they might be used.

In Canada we want the real-life street names to be used as the primary name.

https://www.google.ca/maps/@46.056063,- ... nsjnwg!2e0

Driver exiting Lotusrow Dr, will not see any signage indicating Rt 106; they will only see Salisbury Rd.

Waze should announce turn left/right on Salidbury Rd.

My preference is to avoid using dual names unless there is conflicting signage.

For example here: https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... s=74359329

The entire street is Markham Rd except for this sign that says Hwy 48: https://www.google.ca/maps/@43.892002,- ... BRpgew!2e0

We had several URs complaining about Waze's TTS which said turn right on Markham Rd, when the sign says Hwy 48. The compromise was to use the dual names. I'm even thinking it might be better to just split the segment and have the northern segment say Markham Rd; southern segment say Hwy 48.

Thanks both of you. If I boil it down
- If the street signs say a road name, rather than a highway number, use the road name
- If the locals have a cute name for a road, but no sign uses it, use the highway number

Thanks again.
