Junction Boxes in Canada

Post by codgerd
Now that Junction Boxes are in beta-WME, can the Canadian champs give any guidance as to how they plan to implement these?

Would it be helpful for editors to start compiling a list of potential candidates for JBs in their local areas to submit to the champs for consideration/implementation? What, if anything, can we do to help?

Cheers

Got it - we'll standby until it's out of beta.

A junction box would not be needed for this roundabout ... but looking at this roundabout, living in a city with tons of roundabouts, this is set up very poorly and will give confusing directions.

It should be set up more like this:
https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... s=24458835

no matter how many lanes are shown, you need to keep roundabouts simple .. the more complex, the more errors occur and it would also give poor directions such as "take the 3rd exit" instead of "at the roundabout, turn left"

At this point, we don't know.

I've added a bunch to an area that used to get lots of u-turn URs, we'll see if they're effective.

Often what happens with these new features is that they're still (truly) in Beta, and their support by both the routing engine and the editor may change, come and go.

I'm ok testing a handful (maximum a dozen or so) in each major municipality until it goes live.

Basically, they're useful for when there's a complex intersection, especially when there are divided carriageways.

Probably could, but is it actually illegal to enter roundabout and exit there? If it is not illegal, we should leave it as permitted so Waze can decide which makes the most sense for timing.

Thanks for the note, Dallas.

For starters - the roundabouts you referenced essentially had bowties at the start to merge your two one-way segments. This is unnecessary (and has been for a year or two) to have correct instructions.

Furthermore, bowties are freaking ugly, and we try to avoid them at almost all costs in Canada.

As for the roundabout in question - it has to do with the bypass lane that was suggested we prohibit skipping of it (i.e. the bypass lane lets NB traffic skip the roundabout and go right onto Queen, so there's a question of whether you'd be allowed to proceed to the roundabout and then exit to Queen without using the bypass lane). In this case, the bypass lane meets the same criteria as an at-grade connector and should remain mapped.

As we were advised it takes several weeks for the data to start being populated for JB and their effectiveness is limited until then.
In consultation with @manoeuvre I have added a handful in the GTA in some area we thought are impactful and we could feel the usefulness of them, so we could give feedback to the development team.
As suggested by Kris, we will stay put until this is being applied to WME and by then we will likely know better how to use them, when and if there are any limitations and special guidelines.

JBs and roundabouts are not yet working well together.
Once this is sort out and we learn where we should used JB we can apply that logic to this one.

I'm not an expert but I don't think the road sign you sent is saying don't turn right.
Looking at Google Streetview (https://goo.gl/maps/kRfFJsziGGQ2) it isn't showing a do not turn sign.
It might be not what the municipality wanted but I think that if they wanted to prevent people they would put a do not turn sign in the roundabout.

If it is forbidden, then JB would be a great solution here (if it worked well with roundabouts).
