Bow Tie Intersections

Post by Krazywrath
Hey all,

Is the standard bow tie good for intersections?

Or would a hybrid work better? (I've been noticing these around lately)

I've used the latter, because the former seems to often cause turn instructions when you're going straight.

That said, I'm not a fan of the bowtie -- the users complain that the intersection looks strange, and it usually doesn't solve the routing issues they're put in place to solve.

Well, if the internal segments (e.g. where the "West King Edward Avenue" labels are in your photo) are <15m, theoretically, Waze won't route a u-turn.

That said, the only true solution is to un-split the road. Waze seems to obey turn restrictions (i.e. not instructing a turn on a "red" turn restriction arrow) better than it handles not doing u-turns...

But practically, would it be wise to leave intersections as they are? (Unless they are being problematic)
I'd say yes -- don't change them unless they're directing u-turns illegally.

The segments I have highlighted above have been a suggested U-turn route. In cases like this I haven't been able to create a bowtie because I'm not a level 5 which is required for these sections.
If you reduce the highlighted section of Norwell to less than 15m, that should solve it. Can you send me a permalink so I can take a look at the locks?

This one is now resolved. This was one of the areas you unlocked for me just the other day so I could correct it. I did just as you suggested and made the middle section less than 15m. Last time I drove in that area I try I set up a route that would have created a U-turn previous to the edit, and it didn't!

Cheers!

Personally, I do the standard intersection, but compress the distance between the roads in the intersection. This has worked the best for me in 98% of the situations. Using the bowtie has created confusion in the past and often created UR.

Yes there seems to be a visual issue with the bowtie and alternate bowtie methods, though they work well logistically.

I guess the visually appealing (and more complicated) solution would be the standard intersection?
But this allows U-Turns when it should not be allowed...

Is there a preferred/better method in general?

Thanks! :)
