Dirt Roads in Vermont

Post by Inactive user -1649923503-
Greetings,
I been doing some cleaning up of South East Area of Vermont and come across many of the dirt roads. My question is does it make sense to classify these as Streets?

Almost all the dirt roads I have ever come across while driving in Vermont are well maintained and easily travelled with a non 4x4 car, they are well maintained, and heck are probably in better shape than some of the paved roads in Boston. I do realize that there are some dirt roads that should be kept wth that classification, but I am more thinking named, well maintained roads, with the editors discretion of course.

Thoughts?

I think a well maintained dirt road makes sense to have classified as a street only if a user should expect to be routed on it like any paved street.
There are some dirt roads in my area that are certainly well maintained, but I don't think users should be routed on to them as if they were paved. This road for instance is classified as a primary street, but it's a dirt road. I avoid it during the winter because of the typical road conditions. I don't know if it really makes sense, but I feel like there should be a separate attribute for roads so they can carry their functional classification, but still be marked as a dirt road.
In the app, I usually turn on "Avoid long dirt roads" during the winter, and turn it off during the summer. I might also turn it on during the summer if we've had a lot of rain. I'd rather not be routed on some dirt roads that are classified as streets or higher in those cases.

I don't think either of us were suggesting that we change the classes due to the season - we should keep the FC of the roads, and hope that the dirt road checkbox gets enabled soon. That being said, I think some streets in VT deserve to be classified as a dirt road/4x4 trail instead of a street (year round), but that would need to be determined on an individual basis.

I would agree that they are generally in quite good shape. I would say that Spring Thaw is the time you might want to avoid them. My experience is that if they are town roads they are plowed just like any other...they have to be for emergency access.

This works well for the local editors who are editing locally. However when someone as myself comes along not local the problem arises. It doesn't appear Waze is in any hurry to enable the checkbox for Dirt rd / Street. Switching road classes due to different seasons seems like much work also. That's my input sorry it isn't helpful as i'm not local.
