Screwy routing

Postby CTGreybeard » Sat Aug 17, 2013 2:54 pm

I'm looking at a UR here that doesn't make any sense at all. Can I ask that someone take a look at the intersection and tell me what's wrong? It looks OK to me.

Routing is wrong

Going west on Stetson Hills to south on Austin Bluffs. SHoukd be a simple left but...
Always seems to route me (and others), north on Austin Bluffs then u-turn at Templeton Gap to go south. Get a report at least once a week (both auto report and user report).
I have pulled the intersection apart and redid it. Same thing happens.
It has routed correctly a few times into east but ends up changing a week later.

Just so that it is noted: If I would post every instance of this issue cropping up literally everywhere here, I'd spent hours.

Just *ONE* more example out of dozens (albeit showing two totally seperate URs at the same spot)

Another one, this time waze took a left and a detour to come back and avoid a (perfectly allowed) right turn.

It would be a *really* nice move if there'd be some official staement from Waze staff here.

Here is another slightly different example of what however seems to be the same underlying issue. In this case, Waze wanted me to do a left turn, go straight for a while, do a U-Turn, come back to the very same intersection and do another left.
All that instead of just going straight ahead.

Of course I assumed some editor had disabled the straight "turn" restriction, and checked as soon as I was home a few minutes later, but no. Straight ahead was "green". I also couldn't duplicate the phenomenon on the live map not even 30 Minutes later. I might also add that this was late in the night, where it is rather unlikely that Waze has good reason to have stored a high delay for the straight through at the intersection. Also, there was n ore-routing involved at any point on my whole route, this is what Waze had originally calculated right from the start. And at no time of the day *ever* this suggested route can even remotely be faster than just going straight.

So, either something's going severely wrong at the routing server itself, or something is storing/corrupting invalid speed data for segments or intersections in the waze database. At any rate, waze should seriously look into this ASAP. Such sort of nonsenic misrouting is not helpful to the acceptance of Waze.

It seems to me those frontage roads cause all kinds of routing issues. Seems like they could warrant their own thread.

Waze staff has stated that they are addressing the circumstance when historic data creates unreasonable routes to cut time. It is acknowledged that many times, Waze prefers to continue straight, make a u-turn and turn right instead of just turning left in the junction just to save a few seconds. Very often this is perceived as a mistake and not as a time saving.

Waze is testing changes to the routing that will prevent such detours if there is under a 30 sec difference between the routes.
