It's also seem to be happening in Malaysia.

At the risk of dog-piling on this problem, I have seen several reports that fit this model, and in fact, I have had Waze try to give me some strange routing around a particular intersection several times. Have we heard back from the Wave developers regarding a resolution? If this goes on too long, Wavers could get disenchanted and opt for another alternative to Waze.

Usually happens in places where there's a long red or rush hour backups for going straight or left, but right turns are quick due to turning on red.

I've been seeing a ton of these the last two or three days here in SoCal. Seems Waze adjusted something on their routing server to make it more prone to "U turn" routing than normal.

Instead of directing the driver to the 1960 service rd to turn left on to I-45 it directs them under I-45 and uturn them back to I-45. It looks like the issue is at the uturn itself but I am not sure. Let me know what you all think. I cannot edit it due it being lock at rank 5.

  • That U turn should not be allowed. I am disallowing it.
  • Those turn lanes:
    • probably aren't necessary;
    • aren't set properly with respect to type (At-Grade Connectors); and
    • aren't set properly with respect to turn restrictions. Although the allowed right turn in spite of the turn lane from Cypress Creek to North Fwy would indicate that the turn lane is not the problem.
  • It could be that the type of the "Cypress Creek Pkwy" segments is part of the problem. Waze doesn't like using anything lower than Minor Highway in longer routes. It's possible that the routing server is attempting to spend as little time as possible on Primary Streets by sticking to the Minor Highway as much as possible.

Of course, it's always possible that it's simply a question of averages, and that disabling the U turn will solve it.

There should probably be something in the routing server to prevent this kind of behavior. I don't know what kind of logic it would have to use to limit it to situations where the left turn is actually legal, though. We can't have the routing server refusing to use any Michigan-style left.

Staff have actually been collecting data about specific occurrences of this, not sure how much they need, but it seems the more the better. Staff are currently working on a prevention mechanism for this type of thing.

Champs have to submit each occurrence manually, so the best data is gonna come from things you personally experienced. If any of y'all come across one of these yourself, leave a UR and make note of the time/date and your approximate route at that time, then post all that here, if you like.

Feel free to post those, too. Since the UR is all we have to go on in those cases, ask the reporter for more information and leave a note in your question asking other editors to leave it open.

I think the Service Road type is related to these issues.

Just as a matter of forum etiquette, it's best to avoid double- or triple-posting at the end of a forum thread. There are cases where it might be desirable, such as in a thread a couple days old when you have new information that needs the attention of the thread's subscribers. In this case, we're just compiling a list of examples, so if you have the last post in the thread it's better to edit that post to add more examples.
