Central MA routing question

Postby sockslabs » Wed Apr 24, 2013 4:38 pm

Could someone please help me understand why Waze consistently offers a route that is both longer and more time consuming?

Here is a route starting in my neighborhood to a point on 495 S just south of Rt 9:

https://www.waze.com/livemap/?lon=-71.6 ... &to_seg=-1

Waze always chooses the route via 290 as the primary route, even though going Rt 9 is about 2 minutes faster. Right now live map is telling me that both routes are about the same, but this isn't typical of what I see in the client every morning. Normally it tries to send me 290 as I head south on Holman approaching Spring St, where it wants me to take a right. When I disregard this instruction by going straight, Waze recomputes, it finds the Rt 9 route, and the ETA drops by 2 minutes, every weekday morning.

In testing this behavior on the live map, I tried moving the origin to a street on the other side of Spring St, and I got this:

https://www.waze.com/livemap/?lon=-71.6 ... &to_seg=-1

Here's what that looks like right now:

You can see that the primary route is 2 minutes longer than the secondary. Why would it do this?
