I agree on restricting the u-turn. It doesn't look like it's allowed there anyway.

As a matter of fact, U-turns are allowed in all directions at that intersection.

Maybe by law, I suppose, but not according to the turn signs on the signal. And there isn't any clear traffic pattern on the asphalt suggesting that it is executed very often.

The intersection could be redone with a single 2-way segment in the middle, and the split into two 1-way segments is done outside the intersection. That is the better way to do it and more generally accepted for Waze mapping. Google likes to map things with the split merging within the intersection, but that's messy.

That is an odd one. I suppose that you could restrict the U-turn. But it does seem like we shouldn't have to edit the map to prevent routing like this.

Just a thought on what caused this.

Very occasionally, when I stop at a junction, Waze will "fail" to notice me stopping in time and think I've actually passed the intersection (probably a minor GPS problem).

In this case, perhaps the driver pulled up at the stop line (where you can see all the cars stopped in the aerials) and Waze decided they had passed that first segment intersection. Then, since the driver was stopped, Waze had time to recalculate the route based on missing the right turn - and came up with this "novel" solution?

Is there a reason to have that triangle in the middle of the intersection at all? Why not have the merger of the two roadways at the south side and extend the single roadway across it?

Yup, exactly.

Weirdest routing I've seen yet

Postby russblau » Wed May 08, 2013 9:04 pm

I came across a UR featuring this highly unusual "Waze provided route":

Waze told the driver, instead of simply turning right, to turn left and then make a U-turn in the middle of the intersection! I checked, and there are no turn restrictions that could have forced this result.

Edit: permalink to the UR location.
