route failure when starting in parking lots

I'm in a parking lot at the grocery store here. If I try to navigate anywhere it tells me that it can't find any roads close enough to use as a departure point, and promptly refuses to route me. This could definitely use a bit of tweaking. I don't think it's a good idea to be putting in parking lots as roads just to get navigation to behave. Nor is it a good idea to force people to start driving and get out onto the road before allowing them to request a route.

Although I've now taken a closer look at some parking lots in Google Maps and they have not only the parking lot entrances/exits, but also the lanes around malls and lanes between all the rows of parking, heh. Certainly muddies the waters as to what we should do.

Geez, I didn't even notice that road type in the list. But that is indeed the type of thing I was thinking of, how dedicated driving GPS units will still route you from a nearby road rather than simply failing.

I suppose editing in the parking lot roads would also avoid the situation where going into a parking lot and parking for a while turns the nearby road red as if there were some horrible traffic jam.

Well, I suppose that's why we have the "Parking Lot Road" type. Regardless, TomTom, Garmin, and in-car units will all either instruct you to proceed to the highlighted route or give you a straight line to the nearest road.
