Routing through a Rotary instead of continuing straight

Post by
This is another classic New England Rotary, but this time, there are no traffic lights and it connects two Freeways while adding access to surface streets.

The issue is that drivers can be routed through the rotary rather than continuing straight through the rotary bypass.

Here is another post dealing with a similar issue:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=191369&p=1418608#p1418491

However, rather than changing segment types or even labels, I believe that based on the "Y" split approach to the two ramps (left to Rotary, right to the Freeway), the split to the right should be given routing priority because it is just continuing form one Freeway to another Freeway, whereas, the ramp to the Rotary should be of less priority as it is an exit to a Minor Highway and Primary Streets before reaching another segment of a Freeway.

So, I think the split should be changed so that the left ramp becomes "turn left" to the Rotary, and the right ramp is straightened to become "continue" to the Freeway.

What say you, fellow Wazer?

I think this is an example of a situation that BDP is intended. However as the following freeway shares no names BDP doesnt work here, and based off the other post referenced appears to have issues with roundabouts.

Looking at route speed majority of the time this is the favored route however during rush hour this can be the favored route and I would agree less desirable. It appears to conflict with the spirit of BDP and the guidance for diamond interchanges. If we did add SR-57 as a name here we may achieve BDP protection and avoidance of the roundabout, but I am not 100% sure on that with the roundabouts (although if we cut this ramp into two we may hedge our bets).

We could also just have this ramp extend all the way to US-5 and the other on ramp run right next to it as an alternative option. But you might loose some data.

Also looking at the area, this doesnt need to be its own segment for the elevation purposes as the next segment is elevated as well, and they are not utilizing any traffic calming ramp stop lights.

The roundabout road type is also unique here since this roundabout primarily serves as access to and from two different freeways but has a PS and St attached to it as well, making it not a candidate for ramp road type per wiki guidance.

Overall a fun intersection

I was thinking that but it would impact BC there so all a question if we wanted to do that.

Name this "SR-57E".

Give this segment an alternate name of "SR-57E".

That will help detour prevention work better because routes following that path will have a single name to follow-- SR-57E.

I think if you keep your angles straight, it might work.

Maybe?

I wish we had a WME sandbox, where we could try things out. Maybe even a setting in the app where it would actually use the sandbox for routing.

You could add a wayfinder segment to force a turn instruction, if needed.

If I'm not mistaken, the ramp to the right will become BC and will not get a turn instruction; the ramp to the rotary will get "keep left".

RE: BDP - one way to engage it is to add the same alt name for the 2 segments before and after the detour.

Reading thru the BDP wiki again, I see that the segments before and after the detour must be of the same type for prevention to kick in, even if I add a common "alt name". Way to do that is to extend the lower (right most) ramp all the way to US-5 at the entrance node. That'll require R5 to unlock and to allow for segment renaming. So.... if ya'll want to find an R5 to over see us and tell us which answer is the best, that'd be fine. Meanwhile, the ramp alt name hack is doable so let's give it a try for now.
