Waze for FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010

Post by alan_zimm
I believe we need to coordinate the South African Waze community to make sure that visitors to South Africa during the FIFA world cup will be able to use Waze in a meaningful way.

I suspect that a Wiki page listing a TODO/goal list would facilitate this. I imagine the things need doing/checking are

1. Make sure that the area around all stadiums is navigable
2. Make sure the relevant POIs are entered for host cities: Parking, bus pickup points, stadiums, airports, official FIFA event locations, etc
3. Make sure the airports and other public transport points are properly entered.

Anything else?

Is there already any effort in this regard?

Maybe the Waze team could develop an offline version in the next 5 to 6 months?...

Not a bad idea. Gives a bit of focus to work towards. Make sure the stadiums, fan-parks and airports are there at the very least.

I'll see what I can do in my area.

I don't think it'll be a problem. The biggest problem will probably come from the retail level where the sales staff don't know what's allowed.

Here's an article from last year which covers it:

hkabla raises a good point. Given the costs of romaing data, Wazing in SA could get pretty expensive for our World Cup visitors unless they get a local pay as you go SIM for their 3G usage. Does anyone know whether the recently-introduced RICA legislation makes special provision for tourists, or are they going to have to jump through the same hoops as locals to provide proof of residential address before they can acquire a local SIM?
