City social groups

Post by vince1612
Hi guys,

We have the national Facebook page which works well for country-wide announcements and Waze news in general.

But sometimes I wish that we could also interract more locally with Wazers to work on map problems or traffic issues. I think it wouldn't be fitting on the main page as if I start to post and talk about issues in Geneva it might make people from ZH unsubscribe if it's not interesting to them and vice-versa.

I wanted to use the Facebook page to ask people who follow it if they would be interested in local groups on Facebook for more direct and local community communication. Something like: "Would you be interested in Waze city-groups talking about traffic in your city and in your language?"

If we don't get many people who support the idea we can just forget about it.

Could one of you give me a sentence in german to reflect the one I quoted above, so that I can post the question?

Wärst Du interessiert an einer Waze City-Gruppe, um über den Verkehr in deiner Stadt zu diskutieren ?

So far the feedback seems rather positive.

I was thinking Facebook groups, which would allow a better structure with the Post + comments section rather than a chat-based option such as GHO, Whatsapp or Slack where you have to keep up with conversations.

The groups could just be referenced on the main page and website but it wouldn't be only up to us to provide content, it would be open to group members posting their information, eventually until all the content is user-based. What could be good is to have the groups monitored by one of us just so that if we spot any content that would require map editing or closures to be added we could help with that.

I can handle french speaking groups, @Peter: would you be ok with monitoring german speaking ones? We could start with Zürich and Geneva as test groups and extend later if it works well. It could be seen as another place where we can get "URs" and where interaction will be much better than in the WME UR chat.

I've made a group which I will be managing: Communauté Waze Genève

Facebook is giving me a hard time to setup a shorter/easier URL for the group right now, but hopefully I will be able to set one up soon.

My idea/hope is really that it will allow for Wazers who are not editors to also participate in sharing information about trafic issues, events, closures, so that editors in the group can use the information to edit the map and improve things, without relying only on URs.

In fact I will try to include the URL to the group in all my UR responses in the future to let people know "You can also help us understand the problem by posting in the Geneva Facebook group: u-r-l"

I think that it's important to consider supporting such a group only if it has a L3+ AM who is a resident of the city/region, in order to manage most closures that would be talked about in the group. Any group made only of L1-2 editors would not be effective.

There are of course other solutions than facebook (Whatsapp groups, Telegram groups, etc...) if you'd like to try that for your area let me know.

After trying this for two months I decided to close the group.

People just didn't participate enough to justify the time and energy. I was hoping we'd get people asking about Map Problems and that we would be able to help solve them, or that people would warn us about missing closures. But nothing, it was just readers who never actively participated.
