Townships

I know there is still discussion about removing at least some townships in Michigan, but I wanted to see if anyone thinks this is okay in the meantime. Let's say we have a town that has both the city and township names on the streets (primary and alternate). As it stands now, there will be no outline for the city so long as the township is in there. Does anyone have a problem with removing the township alternate names from within city/town limits so that the city layer correctly shows the city/town limits? It will still be surrounded by the township until we decide to remove those, but at least it will correctly highlight the town or city.

Note that I'm not suggesting removing important townships like charter townships. This is in regard to the various townships in northern Michigan (and other areas) where no one actually uses those and all we see are a lot of big boxes across the state that don't help you know where the town or city limits are.

No addresses use the township names in these cases, so that won't be a problem. I think it is okay to do, but I would like some feedback first.

No one is putting them there. That's how Waze did basically all of Michigan from the look of it. Everything within a township has the township name unless someone's removed it or added it themselves. At least from what I've seen throughout northern Michigan. It's why you see so few actual towns or cities in northern Michigan marked in the city layer. There are a few, but most are just hidden away behind the townships. The city layers around Petoskey are messed up thanks to the mix of townships and cities entered in a "random" way such that it messed up the display. That's another reason I think we need to remove townships from inside all town or city limits.

Townships do not exist inside of cities. If someone is putting township names on city roads, they need to stop that.

Charter townships have no importance I'm aware of.

Yes, any township name inside a city limit should be considered a map error.
