Michigan Railroad Map from MDOT

Post by Galimaufry
I stumbled across this while I was putting in the CR railway that runs from Utica to Detroit. It's a map of the main rail lines in Michigan (primarily those owned by the big four - CN, CSX, NS, and CR). I'm sure with a little more digging we could probably find further information on those "other railroads."

There's also always the Wikipedia list of Railroads in Michigan which can give some more generalized information about the lines, usually enough to match "what we see" in the aerial view to a textual route description.

Your map isn't very detailed, it really should show all 19 rail lines in the switching yard :)

On a more serious note, the data is all here: http://www.mcgi.state.mi.us/mgdl/?rel=ext&action=sext under "MI Geographic Framework Railroads" The data on this page is what the state uses when they generate their map such as this one or the NFC ones.

In order to use them properly, you probably will need to obtain a shapefile viewer, QGIS (formerly Quantum GIS) is an opensource one. ArcGIS is a windows package with a freetrial. Even without that all the shapefile zip files do come .dbf file which you can load into Excel that contain all the names and endpoints of each segment.
