Neighborhood/Development Roads Private Road vs Street

Post by andrewbc836
I wanted to open this up as I have talked to a few people in NV already but really want to standardize the LV area to start and maybe NV and west region.

Anyway, my main question is what do we want to do as a region? Use private roads for ALL/MOST neighborhoods, gate communities only, or what?

Thanks for your comments and opinions.

I know the wiki said that's one way to do it too. But that's usually reserved for bigger "private" areas.

What I've seen, mostly in the SW here is the entire neighborhood is all private road, not just the entrance. And I think some may be gated but that's not always the case. I guess the argument was that way it should never route through neighborhoods unless the destination is in there. I haven't seen any problems here in Vegas with neighborhoods that use all "street" type roads. No map problems or user reports that seem related to the road type. I just wanted to make things uniform across the valley as I've been working on the newly constructed areas and have noticed this happening.

I hope I'm making sense. I think following the wiki and using "street" is the proper way. I just wanted to know if there was any evidence to support the full "private road" approach too before I changed anything.

Thanks.

I reread the wiki and saw that making everything private wasn't recommended anymore, and to use the 1 private segment at the gate entering in a gated community. I will follow this guideline going forward. I have a few communities that have new construction, and I think when I created the roads there I always default to Street, so I may have to go through and see which ones have mixed Street and Private Road and make them all the same for those.

Thanks for the discussion.

So I ran into a problem yesterday driving to a friends house. Waze routed me into the back entrance of the gated community, but there is no call box on that side. It's strictly for residents. The whole neighborhood is(was) set to Private Road type. So I changed the back entrance to 2 one ways, and the entrance side is private, the exit is Street. And changed all of the streets in the community to Street. I'll have to try again when I get home and see how it wants to route me, but I'm hoping this is the solution. Guest to the community should get routed to the proper gate, while residents will know there is a back entrance they can use. Let me know if I did this correctly, or if there's a better way.

That's what I though too when SuperDave and I were working on it today. I would think just the one way out, or just restricting the turn in would eventually make MP's. If what we did today works, then we'll see if any MP's come up. We shall see. Once I get home I'll put that address in again and see how it routes.

Ok. I updated the development in question.

I think I got it right. The resident only entrance though is longer than 15m, so I can't really do 5m per segement. Is that a requirement to trick the routing?

Resident entrance is on the north. The south entrance has 2 segments because validator didn't like. I think when I hit "Q" on it, that was its correction. I guess I probably need to remove that node and just ignore the error?

Greetings my Casino brethren to the north (no one forgot about you Laughlin). I have heard your plea and will be updating the wiki to contain this information. Have no fear, your voices have been heard. ;)

May I suggest something. To prevent an new editor from coming in and changing this important setup, would it be possible to lock the resident and guest entrances to at least 3 to prevent tampering?

If this is something you all can agree on, then I can include this in the wiki.

SuperDave1426 wrote:That seems reasonable to me. Which Wiki page are you referring to, BTW? We've got a few... :D
I was referring to this one. But it seems that it may have been updated. I'm still going to include the screenshots for examples.
