Add more road types to WME

Post by XKSpeed
There are not enough categories of road types in the WME. Adding some will give editors the ability to nudge the Waze nav engine to the right choice.

At minimum I would like to see a "Major Street" road type added. It would fall between "Primary Street" and "Minor Highway". In so many places there's parallel primary streets and you know one is the better route, but it's not really up to highway class.

Throw in a "Primary Highway" between "Minor Highway" and "Major Highway" and I'd be really happy. :D

Yes, yes, I know Waze automagically uses historical speed data for some aspects of routing. No flaming, please.

For the US at least, most streets only need to be classified as much as there is a need for different types coming out of federal Functional Classification. I can see a need for one or two others, but probably not much more. What I'd rather see is more road attributes (like gravel, dirt, paved) options.

Yes. Routing distance and roast types play together.

Waze did announce plans to add one more class of highway. No ETA for implementation though.

Also touched on in another thread, provide a way to restrict route-through without resorting to violation of best editing practices such as named PLR or "public" roads marked as private.... applicable to small community roads that frequently include traffic calming devices (which do little to reduce segment transit time, they simply waste brake material, fuel, and driver patience)
In the long run, traffic calming devices do more to divert traffic than to slow it down, so the Waze routing server still sees these roads as being legitimate short detours.

The same logic could be applied to alleys.

In both cases of alleys and "calmed" roads, a provision would be needed to allow the routing server to recognize the classification of any cross-street, so if a driver is on such a road, they are directed off, rather than crossing a "street" onto another "calmed" segment, whereas now, if you are on an alley (PLR or private road), and the alley crosses a street, Waze will direct you to remain on the alley segment.
Basically have it route as if the segments alternate between PVT and PLR at every cross-street, but no penalty for a two-segment junction such as at a name/city or elevation change.

Mmmm, someone's still got roasted Thanksgiving turkey on their brain.

But seriously, thanks for the info on road rank. There are some cases where there's multiple parallel routes where a little more road rank granularity will help a local editor nudge Waze to choose the best route for the Wazer.
