[PROPOSAL] Limit scoring rates for new editors

Postby iainhouse » Mon Jun 15, 2015 12:57 am

We've all encountered them: the car park with every lane mapped; the street with every driveway added; the roundabouts that sprout divided connections; the locked, 2-way road that suddenly has a disconnected 1-way twin. These are all things done by new editors and the most common reason is simple: they're chasing points to get their crown and edits to increase their level. Waze encourages this and there's nothing wrong with it, but until we find & educate them, they can cause problems.

My proposal is that WME should automatically limit the rate at which new editors can score to place a limit on editing just for points. I do not intend this to stop editing at all. If a dedicated new editor wants to improve the map, they can keep going - just without scoring.

For all editors below L2, I'm suggesting a limit of 50 edits per 24 hours. Below that limit, edit and points counts increase normally. Once 50 has been reached, the edits score would freeze and no points would be awarded. This could be notified by the regression checker when hitting Save, maybe with a link to the Help Centre to explain more.

There's also a second, important part to my proposal: this should only happen in self-managed countries, or countries with an active CM team. The idea is that any editor hitting these limits can be directed to contact the admin team. We can then provide guidance and, if we're satisfied with the quality of editing, remove the rate limiting by making a request to HQ.

I don't think this limit is unduly harsh. Whilst 50 edits doesn't sound like very much, a new editor could still reach L2 in 20 days. But it would be an important measure to put a limit on points-oriented editing, as well as a good method to initiate communication with the community - something I and others have pushed for before. The problem with this is that the 50-edit limit will almost certainly kick in part way through whatever they are doing. So you might have a new editor who is doing something correctly, but halfway through they get stopped leaving disconnected segments, un-named segments, restricted turns etc.

The last thing we want is to make their editing look bad!

That's true, but there's only so much we can do. Maybe they'll soon notice they're not getting the points they expect and come here looking for answers.

And that's the big thing I want to promote: get the new editors here and get them in contact! Very few new editors are really bad - they simply don't know any better. The car park with every lane mapped and every turn red doesn't really cause much damage. But that's an editor with an eye for detail - point him/her in the right direction and we could be encouraging a future global champ. :)

Interesting... I'd go a step further and suggest that the amount of edits an editor could save each day is also limited by their existing edit count - whilst your proposal would limit the points that could be earned by a newbie in a short period of time, it wouldn't prevent the "every last driveable square inch of a car park mapped in exquisite detail" type edits you refer to.

IME as an area manager, new editors tend to fall into two distinct camps. Camp A sees editors dipping their toes ever so gingerly into the WME waters, making barely a handful of edits at a time, and wanting to do the right thing.

Usually such editors are only drawn to our attention when they don't get it quite right which is unfortunate because arguably it's these editors we ought to be engaging with ASAP so we can help them get past that scary initial period where you're really not quite sure if you're doing things right and would probably appreciate some gentle guidance/mentoring from a more experienced editor. Any automated limits on how many edits they could submit early on in their editing careers would probably go completely un-noticed by them, because they're not making that many edits each day.

Camp B meanwhile is populated (fortunately less well so than camp A) by people who, on being let loose in the WME environment, do go a bit crazy. The resultant edits are generally far easier to spot, but are also the edits that generally require more of our time and effort to clean up/repair/nuke from orbit. And I'm not 100% convinced that all of these editors are going to such lengths just to earn points, so whilst a cap on the points earned per day may well encourage many of them to slow down I still think we'd see occurrences of it.

It's these editors that the automated safeguards would be best placed to deal with - if an editor has zero editing history, would it be such a bad thing if they were hard-limited to 50 edits (or perhaps even less to start with) a day, to significantly minimise the impact they can have on the map in a short period of time whilst still learning the basics, let alone the nuances, of editing?

Good point... maybe relax the limits for the current editing session, but then apply them to any subsequent sessions that day? Or maybe do an area-based limit - unlimited saves within a, say, 1 mile radius (clipped as required to the boundary of their driven area) of the first edit saved that day, but no edits can be saved outside of that radius no matter how large their driven area might be?

Very interesting idea.
I'm only concerned that since these new editors usually make mistakes because they don't take much time to read instructions, forums, wikis or anything.. Some of them might also totally miss the notification by not caring to read. Then just continue to edit "for points" and cause damage anyway.

But of course that would probably lower their numbers, since we can hope as many as possible will read and understand.
