I'm assuming a School Zone is an area with special restrictions. Do they exist outside the US?

Fair enough. I was just trying to get some support in favour which could, as you have indicated, be put in the queue with the other requests.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm obviously not understanding the problem then. The WME already has functionality and dialog boxes for specifying times for turn restrictions so I had envisaged that exact same thing would be applied to the school zone "icon" thus enabling that alert for only specified times during the day. Indeed the current restrictions on turns not only has times and days of the week but also date periods so it is perfect for setting up for the school year?

Yes it is permitted to drive through but at a reduced speed. My point is that a speed camera is the same. They are (in theory) put there as safety mechanism to ensure people obey the speed limit on a dangerous section of road or where drivers regularly flout the law. Waze has allowed the ability to place a speed camera on the map and as you approach it you get an alert that there is a camera ahead. School zones would work exactly the same way, you get an alert that there is one ahead but ONLY during the times when the reduced speed limit is in effect, hence my comment about the utility of the now enabled time limitations.

So in case other countries work differently in Australia all the streets which surround a school (even major roads which are normally 80km/h!) will have the speed limit reduced to 40km/h for a morning period and afternoon period (exact times vary by state). There are some that are all day where the school spans a road.

I envisage it would work by dropping a speed-camera equivalent icon at the start of the zone on each street and then specify the times. That's it!

Cheers,

Hi Wazers,

Firstly yes I did do a search and looked through all 13 pages.

A lot of the negative view regarding school zones was the lack of time based restrictions. We now have that in place so that is moot.

The second argument as put forward above is you should just look out the window. Fair enough concept but Waze already has the ability to add speed and red light cameras so to me there is no difference. It would just be another alert. I could already fudge it by putting in speed cameras around schools even though there aren't any there so why not support the reasonable requests by MANY (13 pages!) to have school zones as an option which works EXACTLY the same way as a speed camera but has a time restriction??

Let me be clear I am not in any way trying to link the routing functionality of Waze to this request. I know Waze will learn about the slowdowns.

Add Australia to the list of countries that have these and where people think it would be a good idea.
Cheers,
Gav...

AlanOfTheBerg wrote: But regardless of this, it is almost never faster to go around a school zone than to go through it, so the effect on routing would be zero.
Counterexample: Commuting from Melbourne FL, to Satellite Beach, FL across the Pineda Causeway. S Patrick speed limit drops from 45 to 20 when the school zone is in effect so it often became preferable to take A1A which has no school zone on it.

It really depends on the layout of the streets, and what viable alternate routes you have. It's an overly strong statement to claim that routing around the school zone is almost never preferable, but I would agree that it's usually not going to be preferable to route around a school zone.

More Wazers doesn't solve the problem. Even if every car driven had Waze running in it, Waze would stumble when restrictions started and ended. Waze is relatively slow to respond to changes in traffic.

What would be useful is if school zones were treated as hazards, and you'd get a pin on the map and an alert if you were to attempt to enter one during a time when it was active (or even maybe a few minutes before). Similar to construction zones and other things that temporarily hamper traffic, so that you get an alert that Waze's routing may not be optimal, especially if the restricted time has just started (or is about to start).
