Since the road you are on generally only takes up the center third of the screen, I'd do everything I could to move data to the outer thirds.

UI needs an overhaul. Too much wasted space in Landscape.

Postby kelemvor33 » Fri Aug 09, 2013 2:56 pm

This applies to using Waze in LANDSCAPE Mode...

I use two Nav programs that I'm comparing against each other Waze and Google Nav. I like Waze's social aspects with reporting accidents and things like that, but there's one thing that I just can't stand. All the wasted space used up by the UI. See the attached screenshots for an example.

Here's the data:
Phone: Galaxy S3
Resolution 1280 x 720

(Info below is in pixels)

Android Status bar (not counted below) - 50 pixels

WAZE
Top info area and tiny area above it (not counting the Android Status Bar) - 166
Bottom info area and tiny area below it - 127
Usable Portion 377
Usable portion in front of car marker 286

Not counting the Android status bar, this is only 43% of the screen.

GOOGLE
Top info area (not counting the Android Status Bar) - 86
Bottom info area - 80
Usable Portion 502
Usable portion in front of car marker 441

That is 66% of the screen. This is 50% MORE USABLE SPACE than what Waze provides.

Having such a tiny amount of space to actually see the map (which is the whole point of using a Navigation program) makes Waze really hard to use. Any chance someone can modify the Landscape layout?

My suggestions:
The black bar at the top is HUGE. It should have the info on one line. Turn arrow can be on the side but the miles and street name should be next to each other. Or put the Turn arrow and the Miles to go above and below each other and then put the street name across the top. Either way, this would cut the top bar down to about 33% of what it is now. Most of the bar is empty all the time anyway so it's completely wasted space.

The bar at the bottom can also be widened. The info should be displayed in a single row instead of in a box. I also don't really need to be able to see the time remaining and the actual time at the same time. Maybe let me toggle it by tapping the box or choose it in options or something like that.

Both boxes should be flush with the top/bottom edge of the screen. There's about 12 pixels at the top edge and 16 at the bottom that are just completely useless.

Once those boxes are moved/resized, the Car Marker can also be moved down further towards the bottom so the whole map can shift down to give me more view of what's coming in front of me.

I'm not a graphic designer but I've also attached my MS Paint Mock Up of what a new design could look like. This increases the Usable Space in Front of the Car to over 500 pixels which is huge.

Anyway, I don't know if this was brought up before or if anyone will read this that actually cares or is in touch with the UI designers but if so, please pass this along.

So do Waze Devs actually read these forums are are we just posting here for our selves to read? I've stopped using Waze because of this issue but would love to go back if they cleaned up the UI.

I totally agree with you Kelemvor33. And I especially like your layout screenshots. Brilliantly done! I also have one which isn't quite as good but it has minor changes using elements Waze already has. For instance, the navigation bar on top is the one used when notifications pop up on screen. Even minimising that makes such a huge difference. Here's my idea.

Be a priority for some reason.

BUMP!!!

This thread has been dead for a while but the landscape UI still uses a giant top bar and a center bottom bar??
The Landscape UI need a re-design with information and guidance information put to the side, looks absolutely stupid to have a high end super phone with a gorgeous screen and then only have a third of it showing the maps???

Any plans to do anything about this in the future????
