Trucks, RVs etc.. specs for routing

Postby ghosttrack » Thu Sep 18, 2014 10:07 am

I suggest to implement features for the trucks or to develop a version dedicated to truck drivers that cooperate with the regular version.
Few navigators do it, are very expensive, and Waze could have much success because there are many trucks and drivers would be prolific of reports, adjustment and so on.
They work on streets days and nights, so who better than them to have quick and massive amount of any kind of reports?
My brother use Waze even on truck and he loves it as me, but lucks of specific indications that a truck driver need such unallowed streets by bridge highness, weight limit, and so on, for example.

Absolutely to implement for two reasons, the first one: it is already possible and already we're putting restrictions for heavy vehicles by WME. In addition, lower speed of TIR on some Highways / roads falsifies the data of average speeds and therefore the ETA. So it's definitely something to be implemented even in the algorithm of calculating average speeds on that particular client is used on a truck (lower average speed). It would also be useful to include in addition to heavy vehicles, including Public Transport, so as to use didicated lanes.

Things it could warn about are

1) low bridge and give height imperial and metric
2) weak bridge give weight limits
3) narrow section give width (bridge or road)
4) speed hums or hump back bridges info for low trailers
5) roads unsuitable for hgv lgv and other types of large transport vehicles like buses.
6) not suitable for bendi buses
7) only suitable for vehicles of a certain length

So you could either have to select a vehicle and dimensions criteria before planning a route. Or have a few lorry bus options somewhere during route planning?

The problem of this feature would be, that Waze would have to filter out the speed data of trucks when calculating average segment speeds and slow-downs, since trucks usually drive slower than cars, especially on freeways. (Over here, vehicles with a max weight above 3.5 tons are limited to 80km/h / 50mph) Furthermore we would need a totally new kind of restrictions and reports, e.g. for roads that a closed for trucks but open for cars.
So all in all this is a similiar discussion as "Waze for bicycles" and so far Waze has not shown any willingness to integrate modes for different transportation categories...

But some truckers use it now anyway. So how does that data get used? Or calculated?

I'd love to see some truck specific warnings as well.
-Weigh Station open or truck inspection open.
-Road hazard prevents truck passage
-Temporary weight restrictions
-Temporary height restrictions

This is nothing more than a addition of a feature which would include user's vehicle ie. car/truck for truck a certain values would be integrated and a route calculated based on the information about the vehicle.

Still have to add the transport of dangerous goods - ADR classification from 1 to 9 and pass through the "green zone" - added several ecology class . Still have speed limits for different trucks and they will not be able to drive fast on the highway. Mode truck is not enough; you also have to choose which truck from many different.

You are completely missing the point here. Once the "truck mode" is recognized the fine tuning can begin with other features you mentioned. The simple fact is that it's nothing more than a car attempting to select a scenic route to go from point A to B vs. Shortest vs. Fastest.

The flexibility of the app ought to be an upmost of importance otherwise what's point in sharing the info when the only route that's always is selected is option A.
