Speed Limit integration

Postby manatani » Thu Nov 14, 2013 7:39 pm

I saw that another person had posted a similar request, but I also have a potential solution, and the other topic was locked. Wikispeedia is a non-profit trying to map all speed limit signs in the world. Integrating it with Waze would do two things:
1) it would give the potential to dramatically increase wikispeedia's database, if the functionality were added to Waze to report speed limit signs.
2) it would give Waze the ability to report when posted speed is exceeded.

The other topic is probably locked because this has been requested many times before. Per the forum rules, you shouldn't create a topic that is the same as others. You're welcome to reply in any of the other topics on this. In short, Waze said at one time that they would add speed limits. That may or may not still be true, but even if it is, it will not likely happen anytime soon.

Yes, the other topic was locked for the reasons mentioned above.

Bottom line, the routing engine doesn't care about speed limits, on how fast cars are actually travelling on the roads involved. That's the benefit of using real-time speed info for routing decisions, it will get you there in the shortest time possible.

If Waze started to alert automatically to the speed limit, it would be the first thing I would disable in the app (or if you couldn't, I would stop using Waze entirely) - here in CT the speed limit on the Interstates is 65mph (55 in a few places), but everyone drives 75-80mph on the roads (conditions permitting). If Waze would alert it would be come quite annoying.

Still, Speed Limit integration with the option to turn warnings on and off easily would be quite useful when traveling outside our normal routes, especially on smaller country roads where there is little traffic to judge speed by and where small towns often use speed traps as a means to raise revenue at the cost of the hapless out of town driver.

So, just because you or I wouldn't need it going to and from work, doesn't mean it wouldn't be a useful feature to many Wazers.

It is likely coming, but not any time soon. Typically, Waze doesn't implement things they don't feel will impact or be used by >80% of users.

There is no doubt that people want this and that it can be useful. But as mentioned, it isn't likely to happen soon. Waze knows about the interest. It is up to them to decide when our if to implement it. There are other items that have greater importance.

About this feature, we would found many people arguing in both senses.
For me, for example, it's a must have feature. In my country speed limits are continuously changing along the same road, and small low speed zones in unexpected places are the favorite places for speed traps. In a typical route of 20 Km you will found more than 40 speed signals, so you have to keep always an eye on them. I typically drive with a tomtom, and its ding-ding when surpassing speed limits is very useful for me not having to be constantly aware about signs.
A on/off switch or even better a "percent over speed limit" value switch, I think it could meet everyone.

Yep, but not really the point.

Garmin is wrong about the speed limit most of the time.
