Alerts in All Directions/Median/Both Sides

Post by MGODLEW
As per forum rules I want to clarify this is not a request for a new feature. I know I have seen it requested countless times to have some alerts be able to alert Wazers regardless what direction the Wazer is driving, Such as Police sitting in the median of the road. However, I have not seen an idea proposed on how to accomplish this. I think I saw that Waze is working on this but I have not heard anything about an implementation date nor have I seen a suggested concept, I would like to suggest a solution that might work for them if this is not their concept already. I don't think an algorithm for this would be too hard to develop.

Essentially, with my concept, every alert that is reported will have a "radius" and if another road with the same level touches that radius, then the alert is sent to the Wazer on that road. The only problem I can see is being able to determine the threshold of the radius. But I'd say ideally, any roads within 50-75 yards would be included in the radius. I think the same algorithm that groups duplicates of the same type of road reports might be able to be used here as far as reports in XX amount of distance.

The report submitter should have the following options to choose from: My Lane, The Opposite Lane, All Directions

The idea behind "Alert in All Directions" primarily is for a "Both Directions" type alert but should include reports for the other direction you are heading as well.

I could have used a feature like this on my drive this morning when there was a deer in the middle of the interstate. "Hazard in both directions" would be good for police and animals!

Hi,

so what is the actual situation with alerts to both directions? I remember that at times as I was an owner of WinMo device wit Waze for Win Mobile installed, there was the possibility to select an event for both directions. As I have new cell phone with Android OS and Waze for Android, I am missing this function every day.

Thanx

I gotta chime in on this.
Several times I've seen police setting up in the median of a 4-lane (non-divided) highway. With radar detectors facing both ways, they can stop people in either lane. The app is designed to only permit reports on one side of the road.

Also, IMHO, get rid of the "hidden" vs "visible" choice and make change it to "speed trap" vs "traffic stop." Just an idea :-)
Waze on!

I do report to "Other Side" on a divided highway, just like the example from @MGODLEW, and notice the image shows up at the inside of my lane. Are Wazers on the other side actually getting the notice or does the feature not work on divided roads?
currently does not work on separate roads heading in the other direction (essentially if the road is split)

Would love to see this implemented in some fashion too. At the very least for police. There are plenty of times a cop is sitting and monitoring multiple lanes of traffic and it would be nice to be able to alert everyone, not just one way.

I think the "other side" report needs to be fixed for divided highways to properly alert traffic on the other side, and I also think that a "both sides" option should be made available for police. All the time on the Interstates 84/86/15, and US-20 limited access highway in Idaho, police are monitoring both sides from the median and are known to do quick u-turns if they are facing the wrong direction from somebody they decide to go after.

Implementing this for construction would be a little trickier... around here, when construction starts on my side, it is usually where it ends on the other side. So if the reporting did both directions on that, likely the people on the other side would get the warning alerts when they were already in the construction and nearly out of it. Perhaps if a "both sides" option was made available on a construction report, it would allow you to do a separate one-tap press when you get to where it starts on the other side, to submit the report for that side.
