Thank you for the update, Daliah, and thanks to everyone who was involved in providing the information you just gave us, and involved in making the internal changes on how features are released.

Improvements in internal communication around new feature release is a very positive change. As part of that, please re-iterate to the folks involved that a step to explicitly consider what uptake will be like for editors of various degrees of experience and connection to the editing community, and to explicitly get feedback on how to make this as easy to understand as possible. This early change to a more descriptive road type is great. It can certainly help avoid future problems such as the persistent (to this day) confusion about other road types such as Walking Trail and Pedestrian Boardwalk.

Your post also tells us what to expect from the Alley road type as it continues to be developed, and it tells us that if the Waze community sees the need for a "terminal road" type (such as the terminal road type found in Google Maps), that it should continue to try to press that point and request yet another new road type.

Thank you again for a very informative post, full of information the editing community can use to make decisions about improving the map.

From the current discussion, it seems clear that even the "narrow road" street type will be misunderstood. It will cause a lot of confusion, and some poor mapping.

Since we cannot remove this road type from the list, can it have a more specific name, at least in the languages /en/ and /en-US/ users?

Can we conlcude that "narrow street" is a two-way street that fits only one car i.e. street that is not more than 3m wide in reality.

We know that narrow streets penalyze slightly private cars and taxis but not motorcycles and have slow average speed. So they act kind of parking lot roads except that they generate traffic jams and let motorcycles pass freely. Taking this in mind perhaps the routing will be improved if we start marking service roads inside residential complexes with apartment buildings as "narrow streets" instead of "parking lot roads" what we are doing currently. Thus cars will be diverted as before but the motorcycles will be allowed to pass.

It will add no extra penalty to Private Roads and Parking Lot Roads and therefor almost certainly won't for Narrow Streets either.

That's good to know.

Unpaved only works on segments that do not already have a penalty of their own, it does not provide a cumulative effect.

It will add no extra penalty to Private Roads and Parking Lot Roads and therefor almost certainly won't for Narrow Streets either.

But imagine someone is a motorcyclist - probably he will want to avoid "unpaved" roads, and not "narrow streets".

Yeah, it was a mistake removing "service roads" back then. Now "Narrow streets" come as a response to the need of mapping narrow streets. They just need to change the colour to different than Private roads. In terms of routing they seem to be preferred than "Parking lot roads" which are preferred than "Private roads"

That is definitely something to bring up with your local community. In the USA, we won't be doing this, as it would involve allowing motorcycles to freely transit private property.

I guess he's talking about streets categorized as PR because are residential roads (sometimes properly part of a private property or not), but no control gate or similar so public driving is allowed for cars but not desired (narrow road, lower speed or speed bumpers, etc.).

I've tested several times and works very fine. In this case, changed those streets for add a small penalty, they are wide enough for two cars but full of bumpers and low maintained.

Red arrow: now

As you can see, red route is more logic and fast than yellow.
