Have you ever wondered what all the colors of the arrows in the GPS points layer of the WME represent?

The answer is simple, every color represents a different direction.

However, which color represents which direction? That's a little more complex! Check out the visual below:

Please note that GPS points are taken from individual drives, selected randomly, and not aggregated data.

The system also makes sure that not the entire drive is reflected on the WME, but just a part of it.

Thank you,
Adrian

For the uninitiated, this is called "color by azimuth."

The GPS arrows are from aggregated data, so there would be no particular use to show velocity. Velocity data is too discrete to show in this format, as it is different in 30-minute slots throughout the day, so graphically rendering that is daunting and would, if you put it all on the screen at once, be overwhelming. Since the only way to get this data is to query the routing server, this is essentially the same as using the Route Speeds tool.

Just FYI, the Layers section in the Waze Map Editor Interface and Controls page has stated the following since September 29, 2011:

"The direction of travel for a GPS point determine its color, so that all drivers going the same direction will show their points in the same color."

I find it ... humorous that many long-time editors haven't read this before. :ugeek:

Yes, though the "Interface and Controls" is the "what's on the screen and how does it work" page so I'd have thought it would have been read rather early in the learning process.

Segments used to have that attribute and some scripts showed it but it was removed.

What I'm talking about is seeing exactly where in relation to the segment the numbers are coming from.
I am not very sure about this but I think scripts are getting that info from livemap, not from WME like in the past.

This particular road pair is particularly troublesome with Waze frequently routing off-and-on right on the edge of BDP/SDP parameters, but when the driver ignores the instructions, Waze doesn't recognize it and may keep the driver "snapped" to the incorrect segment for quite some distance.

Or perhaps there is a "cluster" of invalid points along one of the segments that have either a high or low speed that is throwing the average for the segment off.

So speeds are one issue.
I know what you are talking about, take a look at this segment in SV.
taco909 wrote: Another issue is age.
How old are these points?
If we have a road that is closed due to construction, or WAS closed and has been reopened, it would be nice to have a way to know how old the "arrows" are that we are looking at.

As it stands, the GPS points are generally useful only on an immature map where the directionality or relative position of the segment may be in question.
3 months, I agree we should see a difference in those points, which are more recent and which ones are almost 90 days.

I suggest that the colors indicate the old of a GPS trail, would be more useful.
Color is added because sometimes you have a lot of directions at some points or somethimes overlapping in some areas would make difficult to distinguish one arrow from another if they have the same color
GPS Trails are 90 days old maybe a transparency gradient would be more useful in addition to coloring (clearer = Older trail)
