Ack! Ramps for rest areas and transportation stations

Post by AlanOfTheBerg
I just realized that I have been using the Ramp segment type for the on and off "ramps" for rest areas and truck stops/weigh stations. By the wiki definition, this is wrong! Should the definition be amended or should I (we all?) go around changing our exits to match the at-grade connection definition?

Agree on the use of ramps for rest areas. I've also been using the "Exit to Rest Area" on entrance and "to I- ##" on exit conventions.

Although maybe the grade is a few feet different and you can justify using ramps vs. the Wiki definition?

I do the same, if it's a highway/freeway that uses all ramps for entry and exit, makes sense to keep it consistent and use ramp road type for the rest stops also.

I concur. I use ramps for rest stops off xways and then parking lot rds for the internal rds. Seems our common usage trumps the Wiki and we should edit it accordingly. That said I've been a changing Michigan left turns from ramps to roads as I find them. Some were even my own doing in the past.

I thought it was pretty well established that if it came off of a limited access freeway, it should be a ramp, and that's one of the few instances that wouldn't be a change of grade.

I have following the same methodology on the rest stop roads. I have also been changing the "Jersey left" to road types as I find them. (Same as a Michigan left I'm sure).

I also follow the ramp off/on and parking lot roads inside. I think if it's an interstate, ALL exits should be a ramp because that is how they are designed. I wasn't aware the wiki had something on this.

I also cover the area in a POI (some of those things actually have names but otherwise it's just "Rest Area" or "Weigh Station", etc)

I only have a couple dozen rest areas in my managed area, but what I've been doing is just classifying the whole rest area road (offramp through to onramp) as "Parking Lot Road" ... that's been helpful in keeping the routing server from sending all Wazers through the rest area when it's a few feet shorter than the highway . Still, the ramp-parking-lot-ramp idea has merit (if just for being able to go make a few more edits to improve places that I've already worked on :D), so I don't mind making those changes if that's the general consensus.

For rest areas and truck stops (and parking areas, and service areas, etc) I have use ramps in and out and named something like "Exit to Rest Area" and "to I-40 W".

Agreed it doesn't match what is in the wiki (so I am in violation of statements I myself added to the wiki).

In most cases these areas are engineered and signed similar to true exits, so I like using ramps. But I am up for a discussion :)

I wouldn't call the roads in and out of a a rest area normal at-grade intersections since they are not controlled in any manner (lights, stop signs). Those roads are also the only way to get from the highway to the network of rest area roads (even if it is just one parking lot segment). Therefore, I think ramp applies.

That said, we can add it to the wiki as an exception/clarification.
