Help with intersection

Post by a4bolek
Hi all,

After map update at the end of April I started seeing one intersection on my route with strange routing. I have looked at the problem area with map editor, tried routing through using Live Map and everything looks normal. Client sees it as if the road sections are not connected.

I've seen similar issues before. As the live map shows, it doesn't seem to be a map problem. I also routed through on my phone and got the straight through route.

I'm not sure what to do about these. Seems to be a routing algorithm issue or lack of speed data problem to me (although there seem to be plenty of tracks through the intersection).

I have seen this occur on a few routes I've driven and I'm sure it has to do with road data. Waze has already learned a trick of mine to go straight through an intersection, make a U-turn, and then come back and make a right turn instead of sitting and waiting for the left turn arrow which takes excessively long at this particular intersection. The route will appear "incorrect" (especially to someone unfamiliar with the area), but that is part of the magic of the program.

I don't know for a fact that that has anything to do with your case of it routing sometimes straight through and other times making a right turn, u-turn, and right turn again. But if the segments and connections all seem fine, I'd say its the routing algorithm.

This brings up an interesting issue. If the light is green when you get to the intersection, obviously driving straight through is the fastest option. If, however, the light JUST turned red, then perhaps this alternate route is the fastest option. I'm not sure what is the best solution. I mean, which route should take precedence? :?

I always wanted to see a client screen capture of one of these. I was hoping that that segment crossing the median would be red...like a very short traffic jam. However, it's not, so my theory has been shot down.

Strange indeed.

Maybe the segment is corrupted? You could try to delete it and re-create it. Just a thought.

That reminds me of an old traffic light we had. It was a literal 2 minute wait for a protected left signal, every cycle! Everyone would do the right-U-straight-turn instead of queuing at the left lane. This was back in the day when they weren't programmed with sensors under the pavement.
