Navigation languages other than English

Postby AlanMW » Thu Jun 28, 2012 12:03 am

I downloaded my WAZE app for the iPhone here in Palo Alto CA. It only gives me the choice of one male or female English voice for navigation. I'd like to select Hebrew as the Navigation voice. How do I do that? Thanks.

Thanks. I'd like to try the minimal spoken approach and see if it's useful. How do I change to one of the pre-recorded voices for Hebrew?

Thanks very much. Yes, I was able to turn on Hebrew directions in minimal mode. I want to add that although the Hebrew processor can't translate English street names but it could pronoun them as foreign words like in Hebrew... words like "telephone" which are pronounced as foreign words. Anyway, that's my input for an improvement. Since I wouldn't have found the minimal and language info, I'll suggest that WAZE put some info on the website...in FAQs and/or elsewhere. Thanks again.

In minimal (no spoken turns) mode, you can select lots of different voice files. Because these are all pre-recorded, you will not get street names.

In Full mode TTS (Text-to-Speech) which speaks street names, you are limited to the official language of the country you are in. One of the main reasons being the speech engine would gag over how to pronounce US English street names in Hewbrew. To get full spoken street names in Hebrew, you would need to run Waze in Israel.

I'm using Waze in Israel (where I live), and I'd like to get it to tell me street names rather than just tell me "turn left in 200 meters". For some reason, when I go to Options/Sound, I'm not given any choice for full TTS - all I have is a volume control and a "use phone speaker" checkbox.

I have Waze set to run in English - is that the problem? When I try setting the navigation language to Hebrew, Waze never manages to download the prompt files it says it needs.

Help!

In Waze 3.2 they renamed the Navigation Guidance from 'Minimal' to 'Directions only (with themes). 'Full' has been renamed to 'Including street names'.

To change the Navigation Guidance type:

Menu
Settings
Sound
Navigation Guidance - Directions only (with themes)

To change the Navigation Guidance language:

Menu
Settings
General
Navigation guidance - Choose the language that you want

If you also want to change the display language:

Menu
Settings
General
Language - Choose the language that you want

You will get turn by turn instructions (in 1/4 mile, turn left). The street names will not be 'read' to you.

How about proper pronounciation of names in Quebec?
When the chosen language is English, the street names and directions are butchered to the point of them being totally incomprehensible.
How about waze speaking in English, but pronouncing the streets in French?

Would love if there are the ability to provide a mapping table.
example:
convert Aut. to Autoroute or to Highway
convert Est to East ouest to West ...

this could be handy feature.
