Like many other things, because we have different countries, infrastructures, laws and regulations, it belongs to local communities to decide how to best make use of this new type considering its specific routing parameters that staff will share in more details later.

About suggesting that Alleys should have a strong penalty, I'm not sure creating a "Private road v2.0" was the original idea by adding it. If a light penalty of 5-10min as announced cannot be put to good use for a community, then they're free to choose not to make use of this type at all and forbid their editors from adding it, but they shouldn't request from staff to "kill" it for the rest of the world who might want it because they dislike it.

Let's not forget this new type appeared following requests from several communities to have such a type, the way it's called doesn't matter, this is not a crazy staff idea, it's a response to a community request. Granted though it should have remained in beta much longer as I already said, but still I don't get why so many "welcome" it only with complaints, fears and doomsday talk so early.

What's more, outside of the weekly trash pickup and the occasional delivery truck these streets are not typically blocked. If someone wants to avoid a narrow street, they can do so, the same as they can choose to avoid a street blocked by a trash truck now, but we don't default to ALL users having trouble using them.
If narrow streets are one-way they can't really be a problem anyway and the average speed should already let routing know what's best to do. Nobody is saying that all real-alleys by definition should be changed from wme-street-type to wme-alley-type.

But again it comes down to local communities deciding their rules and guidelines for themselves. Which should be discussed in local forums preferably as well, otherwise this thread meant to give specifications about the new type will turn into endless pages of disagreements and opposing viewpoints, which isn't constructive.

The problem is that it has been released to production in an incomplete state, with no clear explanation available from WME for editors who don't come to the forums - and no clear explanation of staff of exactly what's intended. I don't car how clear you think the explanation is - the number of questions demonstrate it's plainly not clear enough.
Right, I was only addressing people having issue with the type however. I've already expressed previously that I agreed with all those who said it should not have been added into production yet and that it was totally unexpected. I didn't want to repeat myself but I guess I still should have clarified ;)

About getting people not to add alleys, we already have this problem with newbies adding permanent full restrictions on segments when there are temporary roadworks or using wrong types and/or attributes on the map, we can't forbid them but we are used to this type of behavior, I don't believe one more type will cause an increase in what we already have to deal with on a daily basis.

You made yourself understood, don't worry, I'm more concerned about your understanding of Daliah's post based on the questions you were asking, and I wanted to make it clear that alleys are -again- not a type only for motorcycles. Also it is written that it is meant for places that are drivable by cars, we're not talking about places where it's too narrow for a car to pass making it impossible, it has to be possible.
By misunderstanding the staff post and asking questions based on those misunderstandings, one can spread false information involuntarily by confusing others, I'm trying to avoid confusion to spread.

@Staff: All of these last few messages are another reason why this should have stayed in beta longer. It's been two days since the initial post, there has been 0 (zero) additional posts from staff to clarify anything further or stop false assumptions or misunderstandings. This is turning this thread into a nightmare because the feature cannot be explained fully or clearly by anyone yet.

This is only the third time I'll say it in this thread but this is not a motorbike only segment type. Please re-read Daliah's opening post.

Of course you can pretty much do what you want in the US but that may just cause even more confusion if you name it as something that it is not supposed to be.

Assuming this road type must be in WME now -- before parameters are defined and full details can be released to the editing community: Call it "TEST ROAD"
They had no reason to call it "TEST ROAD" then and they still have no reason to do it now.
They couldn't predict what the community feedback would be about "Alley". Instead of ignoring it, they are now adapting the name based on community feedback, the change is simply not in production WME yet but already live in beta WME. It's not maybe this or maybe that it's "Narrow Street", as a WME beta tester yourself you should read release threads and know this fact already.

Unpaved only works on segments that do not already have a penalty of their own, it does not provide a cumulative effect.

It will add no extra penalty to Private Roads and Parking Lot Roads and therefor almost certainly won't for Narrow Streets either.

Thank you for your very clear and well-illustrated post, delilush

1) Please consider renaming this road type so that its use will be more clear ro every editor who will see it in WME. This is not the meaning of the word "Alley" in the USA. There are many streets in the USA which have the name "alley", or which are considered to be alleys, which are somewhat narrow, but still wide enough for cars. Many editors all over the world have not read your very informative post.

2) Please consider temporarily removing this road type from the WME editor until implementation is closer to completed and a more-descriptive name has been chosen.

Thank you for everything you do to make the map better and keep editing fun for everyone who enjoys the hobby of improving the map with WME.
