Shields

Is there a bug with the shields for highways? I noticed with the last tile update, some highways that were labeled XXX N or XX S had shields and some didn't. I remember a thread a long time ago about the absence of shields on some roads, and whatnot, but has that been figured out?

Yes. It is non functional. Waze is supposed to give us more direct control over shield type and info in a future editor version.

I've also seen state hwy shields in the last two days which I would swear up and down were not there just days ago. Perhaps they are trying to regenerate them again? Either to buy time or to prep for giving us better control in the editor? As usual, we have no clue what they are up to.

The Rte issue is known. They've not fixed it in a long time. Around me, all hwy-named roads have received their shields again recently. The interstates are less consistent.

Roads should not be named with more than one name in the primary name field. That is against the guidelines.

Yes. I was expecting it to be in the next editor release, but it will not be. Waze has said they are planning to give direct control over what exactly appears in the shield. How this works and how this affects the Primary Name, we do not yet know.

It is unlikely we will get state-specific shields any time soon or at all. The method used now is the same as most other online map providers such as gmaps or bing, where all states get the same shield style.

Yes, but we're finding out what we can share from the global meetup. Hang tight.

We've been talking to Waze for quite some time about shields, as this thread shows. AUS didn't have any shields and now they have one, which is great. Waze has been clear that shields are much more complicated than most editors think and that changing the criteria to build them isn't as easy as we think. The "SR-##" format has been given to Waze a LONG time ago, and they haven't acted on it yet. We don't know why it takes an act of God to get them to do what should be pretty straightforward.

While I'd love to see state-specific shields, at the minimum, I'd like to use the square/rectangular shield for State Routes. If you look at the list linked to below, most of them are rectangular (with California being the only exception) - and none are oval. The oval can be used for Country Routes or something else...

Hi guys!

Australia has gone live with road shields now:
Road shields in Australia!!!

We have no special feature in the editor, it's just a pattern coding within the street name. There has been no discussion about a more direct control over the shields (i.e. via editor) during the whole implementation process.

Dual shields: we ran into that problem too, te Waze is sticking the heads together (up to Ehud as I've been told) to verify a suggestion we came up with.

A question to you in NA: do you make use of the state field too or is it also just the country field? The reason I'm asking is, because we ran into a trouble with coding in Austria (I'm active in AU and AT), so we would need the implementation of the state field with us here, if it allows to define a seperate set of patterns for each state.

Thanks for the detailed description, now I'm pretty sure you run the same system like AU, getting shields only from primary streetnames following a predefined pattern. You'll have to define patterns for each possible shield, so currently it might be:
State Hwy x
State Hwy xx
State Hwy xxx

For getting a shield for 98a an additional pattern is required:
State Hwy xxa
PhantomSoul wrote: Hopefully Waze will expand its shield pattern recognition to include these in the near future.
Well, Waze will wait for you to give them the patterns, they don't get active themselves on this.

As I understand US community structure you run each state as Europe runs a country. For shields are a country function, you will have to coordinate a pattern-table US-wide.

To show an oval sign for SR26 you need either recode the name to State Hwy 26 or submit a pattern SRxx. Guess you will have to decide which way to go not case by case but national.

It's absolutely logical to do it this way - changing the streetnames would be much more work.
Might give you the complete pattern table from AU like you will find it in the Wiki:

Note that Rural Road (RR) and Tourist Route (TR) have the same shield, just different coding. Guess that's the same like you will handle those oval shield roadtypes.
