I'm a fan but I still can't use it

I love the crowdsourcing model. I love driving around at home picking up goodies. I love that the iPhone app is free.

But when I'm in an unfamiliar place, every time I try to use Waze to maintain situational awareness, get directions, understand where I am or consider an alternative route, it can't hold a candle to Google Maps, even though I don't get turn-by-turn with Google.

The Google map is clearer and the interface is more useable when I'm on the freeway trying not to crash. :-) In this particular case I knew that 133 led to a toll road so I needed to find a way to approach my destination from the south. Waze couldn't get me there.

I wouldn't post this if I wasn't so hopeful about Waze continuing to improve.

EDIT: Oops, perhaps this post should be moved here

The great thing about Waze is that you can fix the map problems, or at least report the problems and someone else will fix them. As far as I know you can't report problems to Google through the client, and I know you can't edit the maps for them..

Waze is still in the early stages, so you can help improve it by driving with it running, reporting problems, editing the maps, and inviting everyone you know to use it too. The more people that use it, the better it gets.

The more the merrier (and better traffic info.)

But what I was going to suggest was.
*Turn off 3D
*Change from night mode to day mode
* select to hide the top bar and buttons (they show up when you touch the screen)
* press the little arrow on the side so you have north up

After that you're pretty close to the google map besides the cupcakes!

I'm not trying to provoke, but version 1.8.0.2 doesn't seem to me like "blueprint" status. I said at the outset that I'm a waze fan. I live in hope that it will mature to the point where it provides me with value while I travel. If the Waze team finds this feedback helpful, then my objective has been achieved.

Then hit the roads and give us MORE MORE MORE MORE lovely GPS tracks to work with... and why not become an area manager yourself in the process. It's easy, just send an email to alpha@waze.com and give them a permalink of the area you wish to manage.

I started in small scale with my hometown. But that wasn't enough for me, I wanted MORE area so I requested some more. After a while I had ran out of GPS tracks so I though "Heck, I wan even more" and got what I asked for; a really big area. Now I won't run out of GPS tracks or unknown roads anymore. And it's rewarding to help others.

For example, we here in Sweden can't navigate between Gothenburg and Stockholm yet. But in time we will get there. And we can't navigate between places not on the map either.

So get out on the roads and make us all happy campers... :-)
