Any obvious errors behind this UR? (Kaneohe, HI)

Driver wants to exit the H-3 Freeway and turn left onto Kamehameha Hwy.

I've disabled the (illegal) U-turn at Kahiko Street and Kamehameha Highway after the driver exits the freeway ramp, which should suppress this kind of routing. But is there another reason why Waze would have routed someone this way, rather than take the ramp segment that allows someone to exit left onto the highway?

Thanks.

I don't think waze really works like this. When I drive routes like these a couple of times, waze stops routing that way even if don't arrive in the same 10 minute intervals. I'm guessing that any data obtained is used to override the defaults for all time periods (or at least a larger set of time slices than just the one 10 minute interval). Then if more data comes in at different times, waze can start distinguishing between the data.

That makes sense. Believe me, doing U- turns is not always optimal at this spot!

Well, if I'm not in a rush, I often just take the route Waze offers, and sometimes it really is faster.

However, people may set their Waze settings to "fastest" route, but in reality there's a limit to their need for speed. And Wazers always want to push back against routes that seem illogical.

Looking at the GPS layer, there's not much evidence that Waze has data confirming the left-hand turn. Maybe that's part of the problem, and maybe I should look for opportunities to drive that way now and then with Waze on.

There is a wait for the traffic light at the end of the exit ramp to turn left. Waze thinks it is quicker to keep rolling and head right and then take a u-turn.

Unfortunately it seems the routing engine often treats fastest route as "fastest at all costs" :(

Understood. And it is like that everywhere. But until people actually do it, Waze will just keep assuming. I believe the base assumption is something like 5 seconds per junction. So Waze thinks it only takes 10 seconds (plus the time to drive the distance) to make the u-turn. So Waze is probably assuming say 30 seconds to take the whole detour. If the traffic light wait AVERAGES out to more than that, well the u-turn is quicker.

Add in the whole 10-minute increments for historical data, and you needs lots of people to take the u-turn at all hours of the day before Waze gets the picture. And most people are smarter than that ;)

You are right, I didn't mean to say that you had to hit that turn at every 10 minute interval. I was just trying to say that you need to drive it at a few different times so Waze can see the pattern.

It just comes down to more data, better results.
