Here are our guidelines for UK Railways - we opted to keep it simple so editors could concentrate on the roads.

URs work really well for editor notes, and won't appear on the client. Not perfect, I know, but using them won't hold up rendering of railroads.

Spotted in the 3.8 client today (Intl server, default theme), guess what type of segments are shown here...

As I've said many times, URs work perfectly well for notes, without abusing railroads. Go on, give it a try!

I like URs because editors can have conversations right there, and get notified of any new responses.

Adding the words DO NOT CLOSE does tend to discourage noobs from closing them.

a. Aren't URs on by default for new editors?
b. Nearby segments can be locked so that new editors can't mess with them, so it doesn't matter if they don't see UR.

Some of us have been asking for visible railroads for YEARS, as they are a prominent feature in many of our towns and cities.

If trains are crossing at the same times each day, then Waze will learn when it gets congested and will suggest an alternative route if it can find one that is quicker.
