New Map provider Virtualearth.net?

Post by a4xrbj1
Hi guys,

did Waze change their map provider (means aerial map) to Microsoft's Virtualearth.net? Or why is it that Cartouche as of today is trying to access this website?

The aerial picture is still there, even when I block access to Virtualearth.net

Can someone from Waze explain what's going on?

I'm using a Firefox add-on called NoScript, which is showing me all the websites a webpage wants to connect to (besides also blocking some script etc.) and it's showing to connect to Virtualearth.net all of a sudden. So Waze has changed something under the hood, don't know why.

Maybe they're testing something, as I recall to have seen at least for a couple of hours that they once changed the aerial view in Malaysia also to some other provider of map material.

I'm not saying that I'm against it, as the quality (means the level of zoom) is probably much better if we get Microsoft involved!

Cartouche loads these scripts: http://world.waze.com/js/virtualearth.mapcontrol.6.3.js and http://world.waze.com/js/OpenLayers.MyVirtualEarth.js among others. I'd say waze has started to use satellite imageries from Bing Maps. There are similarities in images used in Bing and Cartouche.

Just last month Bing announced providing aerial imageries for OpenStreetMap http://www.bing.com/community/site_blog ... unity.aspx

Waze is probably getting similar treatment as OSM from Microsoft.

I'm not seeing any references for virtualearth in the code, and not seeing any connections to it why I view cartouche.
