Motorway and dual carriageway junction numbers

Post by xiano
Is there a way to label motorway and dual carriageway junctions? Should we just name all the ramps that make up the junction to the junction name?

I have used the following convention for all motorways in Scotland <M8 - Jct 10> and for dual carriageways I only name the ramps if the junction has a specific name or number.

There is an argument to name the destination for the ramp eg <M8 - Jct 1 to A720 (E)> but my personal view is that this creates names that are too long to view on the client. If you know where you're going you don't particularly need the name, if you're not you're probably using navigation and the junction number/name and route map should be enough!

I had a quick look in the wiki (road naming tends to be broken down by country) and there is still no info for junction naming. If we get any sort of consensus in here I'll maybe take a look at updating it!

I'm not really a fan, they look quite ugly on the client IMO!

As an alternative you could rename the section of highway between the ramps!?

You can take a look at what is in the wiki. It is heavily biased to the US (and heavily biased to California for that matter), but it may give you some ideas.

I should also add that I've recently tried to experiment with the "Junction" landmark. Take a look here:

Again, this is in the US and I am not saying what works here works everywhere :)

I have a screen shot from just yesterday that I took for another purpose (shared exit ramp leading to two different exits):

I was hoping that they would appear zoomed out fairly far, but they do not. I think all landmarks may display simply based on size (can anyone confirm?).

Possibly, but there could be a case where the angles of the road result in a client instruction to remain on the highway. Either accidentally or even intentionally if it is a confusing interchange where it is not obvious that only certain travel lanes continue on the main highway. So in those cases it could be confusing to see an instruction say to go to "Exit xxx" while it points to the highway.

As a minor side-effect, you would probably also have difficulty selecting segments between two points in Cartouche since the name would not be constant.

That looks pretty good. I was thinking from a traffic report point of view it might be useful to have junction numbers within waze, I hadn't realised you could add them as a landmark. How do junction landmarks show up on the phone client?
