CHALLENGE: Help find Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370

Here is a challenge for us to help find the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 via croud sourcing!

DIgitalGlobe is providing thousands of satellite images to the public to help find the missing plane.

As of this post their website is down due to server overload. They are actively working to improve their server capabilities.

DigitalGlobe's crowd sourcing arm Tomnod:

My challenge is for all Waze editors to invest some time helping in this process instead of editing for a day as a public service.
Spread the word!

Their servers get overwhelmed, upgraded, and slammed again. I can't get on today.

I think it's a great idea, and I've looked at a few hundred tiles, too. However, I think it would be most useful to have the code written which does image analysis running on thousands of computers across the world, ala SETI@home/folding@home and other distributed computing projects.

I stopped because I think, based on the most recent info, that the images are not from the right potential locations that the plane could have flown to.

144 tiles for tonight, maybe I would continue tomorrow ;-)
They seem to have several search areas.
I have scanned part of at least 3 different areas over the last few days.
Scanned one completely, to all the edges.
Spotted several oil platforms, ships, of course, but nothing looking like a crash site, so far.
The latest area seems HUGE vertically.

Having trouble logging in right now.
Trying various URLs from my history.
Finally got in by asking for a new password and then saying login.
Lost a few points but only about 25.
Found an area around here http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/mal ... map/729394

and to the west and north with large areas of what looks like black smoke or oil on the water and some areas that look like the water is smoother and may have a bit of sheen.

Trying to see if I can find the boundaries.
On further consideration, I think the dark areas may be shadows of the thin clouds.

The site seems more responsive now.

Now its going to be even harder with the reports saying the pilot/s may have intentionally taken the plane and flew 7 hrs somewhere west. That's a lot of area to cover.

This has to be devastating for the families to only get more "what if" scenarios than a solid answer. I hope they get an answer soon so families can get some closure.
