Roads in orphaned subdivisons

Post by tel601
After hurricane Katrina, many new subdivisions were started in the county I live in. Many of them had roads made in them that are not in use and in disrepair, some the roads were cleared to dirt but never completed, and some subdivisions have a mixture. Here is an example: https://www.waze.com/editor/?zoom=5&lat ... 81&env=usa How should these roads be hadled?

In that particular case, Dirt Road would be appropriate. The roads are there, and they look like they're passable. It's hard to tell if they're paved or not, but if they're in disrepair, they're not as good as a normal street. If you make them a Dirt Road, they will still be navigable if someone is trying to get to or from there, but nobody should be led through them if they're going elsewhere. They'll be on the client map, but barely visible so as not to be distracting or clutter. I would suggest setting them to two-way and allow all the turns, just so they pass the Validator test. If the roads are barricaded you should disconnect the roads leading in where the barricades are, but I'd still leave them on the map as dirt roads. This will be helpful if there is future development and they're brought up to standard...nobody will have to research the names or draw new streets. They'll just have to change the type to Street.

I've run across similar subdivisions like this in Pearl River County that were "paper streets". They were mapped years ago, and imported with the basemap, but the streets were never built at all. In that case, I removed them from the map completely. They might be built in the distant future, but since the streets were never built, they may do a completely different layout, making the paper streets less than useful.

Just my opinion, but I would select the roads that are in disrepair and no longer in use and recategorize them appropriately, at least as dirt roads. If they are not drivable, I'd remove any junction with the drivable roads and class them as "walking trails."

Pearl River county has a bad habit of putting planned roads on the map before they are built. There are many orphaned subdivisions in pearl river county. My biggest concern is how waze will look at these roads for routing. In some cases a 4x4 or atv might be needed to traverse the road / trail, the roads were built but have been neglected because no houses were built on the road. Some of the neglected roads will connect between two roads that are in use, but the road should not be driven through. Here is an example: https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-89.44 ... 81&env=usa Stevens Dr is nothing more that a grass road. I disconnected one end to make sure routing through it does not occur.
