;) I95 eastbound via G. Washington Bridge – recurring nightly "closure" event

Most weekday evenings, all traffic eastbound on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge (Fort Lee, NJ) is brought to a standstill. This “event” typically occurs around 8:30 to 9:30 PM.

During this window, which oftentimes is but a brief time period, the upper level is closed to all regular eastbound traffic.

During this closure event, oversized trucking loads, which are queued along the roadway in Fort Lee, NJ, are escorted across the bridge via a police escort. On the New York side, New York City police provide an escort either across the entire city to the Westchester County border or via DOT prescribed roads to locations within NYC.

Typically each vehicle has its own pair of escort vehicles with measurement feelers (poles affixed to the vehicles) to ensure that overpasses are not too low or roadway sections are not too narrow.

These loads (extra-wide or extra-long) have included: new subway cars for NYC, huge industrial tanks, modular home sections, steel girders for roadways, construction equipment, pre-stressed concrete sections for overpasses, steel girders for building construction, escalator assemblies, etc.

Just thought folks should be aware....
