City names & Duplicate cities

Post by YanisKyr
Hi guys, two closely related topics.

City names don't seem to have been standardised. When it comes to city names that appear more than once in the country (in different areas), I see three patterns (below). Which one do you vote for? My vote goes to the underlined version.
1. Livadia Larnakas
2. Livadia (Larnakas)
3. Livadia (Larnaka)

Duplicate cities - Waze HQ can merge/delete cities as far as I know (based on certain conditions). I've spotted a good few so lets start by determining which version we want to keep. My vote goes to the underlined version (for the ones I've got an opinion on):
1. Larnaca or Larnaka?
2. Paphos or Pafos?
3. Polis Chrysochous or Polis?
4. Latsi or Latchi?
5. Egkomi or Engomi?
6. Lefkosia or Nicosia?
7. Sotira or Sotira (Lemesos)?
8. Palaichori (Morfou) or Palaichori (Oreinis) or Palaichori?

Yanis.

3. Polis Chrysochous or Polis?

BTW Polis Crysochous (Cry not Chry) is in the map.

4. Latsi or Latchi?
Latsia
In the map we have Latchi, Latsi, Latsia.

5. Egkomi or Engomi?
Enkomi (with "N")
In the map we have Egkomi.

6. Lefkosia or Nicosia?

7. Sotira or Sotira (Lemesos)?
Sotira Lemesou

8. Palaichori (Morfou) or Palaichori (Oreinis) or Palaichori?
BTW Palaichori (Morfou) and Palaichori (Oreinis) are two different cities. Palaichori (only one word) should be fixed.

In Greek this is written Έγκωμη so your version looks and sounds a bit odd.

You're contradicting with the first quote in my reply here.
I don't speak Greek. All of my notes comes out of the map observation. Second source of knowledge is Wikipedia: List of cities, towns and villages in Cyprus. It is unfortunately only a little trustworthy list which I found on the web.

I agree. But place of stay is only one condition of the success. But that is not enough. Map needs consistent editors*. It is pitty that there is no official public list of names. Saddly there is no better source on the web and BTW most of authors of that page are native speakers.
In my country we have official public database of all cities, streets, addresses etc. It is great for map editing.

The equivalents would be Livadia (Pafou), Livadia (Lefkosias) etc, just for a bit of context.

@Bures may I ask if you speak Greek? No offence or anything, don't get me wrong - I just believe local language is important in deciding such elements.

I'm unable to locate something online, so I have contacted the ministry of transport. Fingers crossed now :)

Thanks, I believe that we can all contribute from a distance but sensitive localisation elements need someone that's physically present in the country/culture. That wikipedia list is not great tbh, for example:

1. the greek "τζ" is translated to "j" - should be "tz";
2. some cities are listed with single "s" but the Cypriots prefer double "ss" - e.g. Lemessos, Vassiliko;
3. the greek "γ" and "υ" are both translated to "y".

Unfortunately I have not heard anything back from the Ministry of Transport and their Department of Public Works yet.
